This figure includes voluntary repatriation from Kenya (83,535) and Assisted Spontaneous returnees from Yemen (4,095) as well as 1,348 returnees from other countries such as Djibouti (783), Libya (377), Sudan (143), Eritrea (34), Pakistan, Gambia, Angola, Cambodia and others. Somali refugees from these or other countries who return spontaneously without assistance from the UNHCR are not included.

On 3rd May 2019 we celebrated BP’s $1.2 million grant to HALO’s landmine clearance in Angola at a signing ceremony in the capital, Luanda.

HALO has been working in Angola for almost 25 years, removing landmines, saving lives and providing jobs for local people—clearing over 860 minefields and destroying 97,000 landmines.

In 2017 we launched our 100 Women in Demining project in Angola, empowering Angolan women by training and employing them to remove the landmines that threaten their communities.

Abnormally dry conditions develop in Nigeria following another week of below-average rainfall

  1. Rainfall deficits since the beginning of the southern African monsoon have negatively affected many countries in the region, including southern Angola, northern Namibia, southern Zambia, and northern Zimbabwe.

  2. Continued below-average rainfall and high temperatures have strengthened dryness in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania.

• The 2018/19 season, the driest season since at least 1981 in central and western parts of the region, was marked by delayed and erratic onset of rains, midseason dry spells, and early cessation of rains. From October 2018 to early April 2019, parts of southern Angola, northern Namibia, southern Botswana, northern South Africa, southern Zambia and northern Zimbabwe registered significantly below average rainfall (50%~ below average, Figure 1).

In line with seasonal trends, national average maize prices in most countries in the southern Africa region were on an upward trend in February and March, before the beginning of the main harvest season.

Regional maize supply for the 2019/20 marketing season is expected to be tight owing to lower harvests in key producing countries such as South Africa and Zambia. The latter saw maize price spikes in multiple markets in March, and an export ban on maize grain and meal has been in effect since mid-April.

Situation Overview

The United Republic of Tanzania was host to 84,347 refugees and asylum-seekers from the DRC, as of 31 December 2018, representing the 25.8 per cent of the total refugee population in the country. The majority of refugees, some 84,246, continued to reside in the refugee camp of Nyarugusu and the remaining population in urban areas.

• Executive Director (ED) Henrietta Fore visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo to see first-hand the extent of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
UNICEF’s ED and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, highlighted the urgent need of funds to meet the needs of children, families, and vulnerable communities.
The two officials visited a women’s care center in Goma, displacement camps in Bunia, and Ebola treatment facilities in Beni and Butembo.

Saurimo - The Health minister, Sílvia Lucutuca, ensured on Sunday that the measles outbreak that is since March this year plaguing the eastern region of Angola is now under control.

According to the minister, the outbreak in Lucapa (Lunda Norte Province) and Luau (Moxico Province) municipalities are currently under control, while in Saurimo Municipality (Lunda Sul) the situation persists and caused the death until last Sunday of 59 people out of the overall 1,664 diagnosed cases.

Luanda - Angolan government spent USD 600 million to deal with drought in the provinces of Cunene (south), Namibe (southwest), Cuando Cubango and Huíla (southeast).

This was announced Thursday in Luanda by the minister of Interior, Ângelo da Veiga Tavares.

The minister was speaking to the press at the end of the meeting intended to clarify the MPs of the 2nd National Assembly Commission on the drought situation in southern region.

Elle a trouvé la mort lorsque le véhicule dans lequel elle se trouvait a été violemment heurté par un camion dimanche soir à N’Sele. La commandante de l’unité de police constituée bangladaise de la MONUSCO, qui se trouvait également à bord de la voiture accidentée, a été blessée et est hospitalisée.
