En el origen del proyecto que ha dado lugar a la creación del Observatorio de la Acción Humanitaria percibíamos la necesidad de hacer un seguimiento estable de la acción humanitaria en nuestro país, compartiendo un sentimiento muy extendido por aquellos que buscan la mejora del trabajo solidario a través de la reflexión, la discusión franca y la crítica (y autocrítica). Con esa intención los Informes anuales, iniciados con el análisis de 2003, pretenden ir cubriendo ese hueco, con clara vocación de permanencia y de apertura a la colaboración con la comunidad humanitaria española.

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced the awarding of a $150 million Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) contract to a consortium headed by Research Triangle Institute (RTI). Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) is the application of safe insecticides to the indoor walls and ceilings of a home or structure in order to interrupt the spread of malaria by killing mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite.

The Global Appeal 2007

Introduction

UNHCR's Global Appeal is published yearly to alert governmental and private sector donors, Executive Committee (ExCom) members and Standing Committee observers, Governments and their Permanent Missions in Geneva, the UN Secretariat, UN agencies, intergovernmental agencies, NGOs, regional organizations and other institutions and interested individuals to the plight of millions of refugees and others of concern to UNHCR.

HIGHLIGHTS CONTENTS

- The FAO's latest assessment shows that 40 countries are facing food emergencies and require external assistance. Among them, the most pressing humanitarian problem remains the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. The already precarious food supply situation may worsen if deteriorating security disrupts the main harvest due to start in the coming few weeks.

- Prospects for the 2006 world cereal harvest have deteriorated further since July.

Nearly one-third of children in the developing world are either underweight or stunted, and more than 30 percent of the developing world's population suffers from micronutri-ent deficiencies.

Tens of millions of people across more than half the states in sub-Saharan Africa need urgent food aid, but the causes are often complex and varied. Food crises were once primarily triggered by natural disasters like droughts.

But according to research by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, man-made causes are increasingly to blame. These include conflict and poor governance, as well as HIV/Aids.

There is a weak to moderate tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall locally over western Mauritania, west central Mali, northern Burkina Faso, and locally over western Niger. A slight to moderate tilt of the odds toward below normal rainfall exists locally over southwestern Mali and central Chad.

This appeal seeks a total of CHF 3,011,000(1) to fund programmes and activities to be implemented in 2006 and 2007.
