The outbreak of violence in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a result of elections scheduled for December 2018, triggered the internal displacement of some 1.4 million people and the flight of over 35,000 refugees into Lunda Norte Province, Angola.
The Government of Angola (GoA) has maintained an open door policy since March 2017, and welcomed Congolese nationals fleeing as a result of conflict in DRC.
Objectives and activities
In 2015, as the Millennium Development Goals reach their deadline, the world can reflect on real progress. Since 1990, thanks to the actions of millions of people around the globe, extreme income poverty has been cut by almost two-thirds, child mortality has fallen by more than half, and more children are attending primary school than ever before.
But these achievements tell only part of the story.

Over the past few weeks a very insecure atmosphere has descended upon the east of the country. At the same time, new political and military initiatives are taking form. The fate of thousands in conflict-stricken provinces hangs in the balance.
The ICRC delegation in Angola publishes this fact sheet periodically to share information about its most significant activities.
This document outlines the global operational priorities identified by the ICRC in 2006. It is based on the yearly internal review and planning process conducted primarily by the 80 field delegations and missions.
