Ondjiva - The southern Cunene province has recorded moderate rain on Sunday night after 12 months of extreme drought in the region, therefore reviving the hope of more than 800,000 people and nearly one million cattle affected by the drought.

Lack of raifall in the region has disrupted the 2018/2019 agricultural season, making the local inhabitants to fail to harvest in 205,000 hectares of the 99,000 fields.

The multiple deprivations affecting vulnerable populations are the greatest hurdle to achieving zero hunger. By directly addressing structural barriers, social protection can help WFP achieve its mandate on nutrition and food insecurity, and reach the most vulnerable, including people living with, at risk of1 and affected by HIV. Reaching zero hunger requires integrated programming aimed at all vulnerable population groups to enable them to access the support systems and services they need to be drawn out of poverty.

Vers la mi-août 2019, des milliers de réfugiés congolais ayant fui le conflit dit « Kamuina Nsapu » vers l’Angola ont exprimé subitement leur volonté de rentrer en RDC, ce qui a pris la communauté humanitaire de court. De plus, alors qu’une grande partie de ces réfugiés est originaire de la province du Kasaï, la quasi-totalité a exprimé le désir de se rendre à Kananga, au Kasaï Central, lors de ce retour. Ceci semble s’expliquer par plusieurs raisons :

  • On 24 October 2019, World Polio Day, an event will be held at the WHO to mark the potential certification of eradication of wild poliovirus type 3. With no poliovirus type 3 detected anywhere in the world since 2012, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) is anticipated to officially declare this strain as globally eradicated. The event will also be broadcast on the internet.

Southern Mauritania remains abnormally dry as heavy rainfall persists in several parts of Africa

  1. Southern Mauritania has been abnormally dry for the past three months. Recovery before the end of the season is unlikely.

  2. Flash flooding was reported in central Senegal last week. Continued heavy rainfall is likely to maintain high risk for flooding.

  3. Central Nigeria has experienced significant flooding over the past two weeks and remains at risk for continued flooding next week.

Lubango - The drought-stricken population in Huila province has risen from 173,000 to 206,000, with the arrival of people from Namibe and Cunene, particularly herders looking for cattle pasture in the municipalities of Gambos and Matala.

The information was advanced this Tuesday, in Lubango, by the deputy provincial commission coordinator of the drought, Mariana Soma, stating that most of the people immigrated came from the municipalities of Virei (Namibe), Curoca and Ombandja (Cunene).

The process will allow the country to identify the magnitude of neglected diseases, monitor ongoing prevention and control efforts, and determine the actions needed to achieve the control and elimination of NTDs in the country.
