Luanda - The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF reiterated their support to the Angolan Government on Friday (18), in order to develop a robust surveillance and monitoring vaccination system to prevent, detect and respond quickly to any case of polio.

According to WHO representative in Angola Fernanda Alves, the organization and strategic polio partners, including the UN agencies, have been supporting the Angolan Government in actions and strategies to control and block poliovirus transmission by providing human and financial resources.

The African Development Bank has approved a grant of $1 million to boost a children’s food and nutrition security program in Bié province in Angola.

The resources are from a special relief fund to the government of Angola, in response to a prevailing drought that has caused severe malnutrition. The grant was approved on 23 September.

  1. Senegal has experienced significant flooding over the past two weeks. Belowaverage rainfall is forecast next week and is likely to reduce the risk for continued flooding.

  2. Flooding continues in central Nigeria. Heavy rainfall is expected next week.

  3. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Sudan next week, maintaining a high risk for flooding.

In efforts to improve the monitoring and assessment of crop production and food supply in the SADC region, the RVAA Programme team is supporting the SADC Secretariat’s Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) Directorate to implement a capacity building programme targeting the Member States.

Understanding gender relations between and among boys, men, girls, and women are essential in determining vulnerability to food and nutrition insecurity.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, women make up most of the agricultural workforce and produce up to 80 percent of basic foodstuffs, according to FAO. Women are generally responsible for food selection and preparation and for the care and feeding of children. There is substantial evidence that indicates that women’s income is more likely to be spent on food than that of men.

Violence, conflict and hunger continue to drive displacement in the Great Lakes region. In May and June, more than 360,000 people were uprooted in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bringing the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) country-wide to 4.8 million. Meanwhile, refugees from the broader region have continued to flee to Uganda, with more than 78,000 new arrivals from the DRC (nearly 47,100), South Sudan (more than 27,100), and Burundi (over 4,500) in 2019.

Ondjiva - The southern Cunene province has recorded moderate rain on Sunday night after 12 months of extreme drought in the region, therefore reviving the hope of more than 800,000 people and nearly one million cattle affected by the drought.

Lack of raifall in the region has disrupted the 2018/2019 agricultural season, making the local inhabitants to fail to harvest in 205,000 hectares of the 99,000 fields.
