Can you get used to living with war? Probably, in the same way that you can somehow get used to living with physical pain, with constant stress, with disturbing noises. You get used to it, you bear with it in silence, because you have no other choice. You don't know of any alternative.
One thing is for sure: the surrounding world can "get used" to protracted conflict. The international community, the media, the aid organisations - they can all turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to suffering that does not have any news value.
Climate change represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet today. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries, climate change is a major threat to sustainable development and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The combined effects of climate change, increased global population and income growth, among others, threaten to affect food and water resources that are critical for livelihoods in SSA.

WORKING WITH PARTNERS
Together with the DRC Government authorities, in particular the National Commission for Refugees (CNR), UNHCR manages and provides humanitarian assistance and protection to refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons. Within the collaborative IDP cluster approach, support is delivered jointly with MONUC, WFP, UNICEF, OCHA, UNDP, UNFPA, WHO, and FAO, among other agencies and NGOs. UNHCR leads the Protection cluster and with UNDP co-leads the Reintegration and Community Recovery cluster.

- There have been 874 cases globally this year (794 type 1 and 80 type 3), compared with 1,503 cases at this time last year (464 type 1 and 1,039 type 3).
- 20 countries have reported cases in 2010, compared with 23 at this time last year.
UNHCR operational highlights
- UNHCR and Nord-Kivu's provincial government led a joint operation for the voluntary return of IDPs living in camps. In 2010, approximately 36,065 IDPs returned to their zones of origin or of choice.

Luanda - The minister of Energy and Water, Emanuela Vieira Lopes, recognised on Thursday in Luanda, that the "Water for All" programme recorded some improvements in 2010, despite a few delays of 17 per cent of the outlined programme.

HARARE/JOHANNESBURG, 30 December 2010 (IRIN) - The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) staffed jointly by officials from Zambia and Zimbabwe, says one of the two major dams on the river between the two countries will open its flood gates in early 2011, meaning that communities may have to be relocated.

Sumbe - At least one person was killed and eight houses were destroyed by the heavy rains which hit Sumbe city, coastal Kwanza Sul province, in the last 24 hours.
This was said to Angop on Thursday by the local administrator, Sebasti=E3o Daniel Neto.
