  1. Senegal has experienced significant flooding over the past two weeks. Belowaverage rainfall is forecast next week and is likely to reduce the risk for continued flooding.

  2. Flooding continues in central Nigeria. Heavy rainfall is expected next week.

  3. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Sudan next week, maintaining a high risk for flooding.

Understanding gender relations between and among boys, men, girls, and women are essential in determining vulnerability to food and nutrition insecurity.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, women make up most of the agricultural workforce and produce up to 80 percent of basic foodstuffs, according to FAO. Women are generally responsible for food selection and preparation and for the care and feeding of children. There is substantial evidence that indicates that women’s income is more likely to be spent on food than that of men.

  1. Southern Mauritania has been abnormally dry for the past three months. Recovery before the end of the season is unlikely.

  3. Central Nigeria has experienced significant flooding over the past two weeks and remains at risk for continued flooding next week.

22 August, Brazzaville - Populations across the 47 Member States of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) African Region only utilize an average 48% of their available health services. But only an average 34% of those same populations even has access to essential services. And health systems in those countries only perform, on average, at 49% of their possible level of functionality.

The WHO universal health coverage agenda seeks to diminish these gaps by strengthening district and local health systems in their delivery of services to all people.

  • A circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) has been confirmed in China. It is genetically linked to a VDPV2 isolated from an environmental sample from Xinjiang province, collected on 18 April 2018. WHO is continuing to evaluate the situation and stands ready to support the ongoing investigation and risk assessment by national authorities.

G20 Leaders met on 28-29 June 2019 in Osaka, Japan, and discussed major challenges facing the world and the importance of eradicating polio. The G20 declaration states, “We reaffirm our commitment to eradicate polio as well as to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and look forward to the success of the sixth replenishment of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.” Read more here.
