Dundo - Exactly two years ago (2017), the Republic of Angola reached out to 35,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), welcomed in Lunda Norte province, due to the extreme and widespread violence caused by political tensions in their country.
It was undoubtedly the largest migratory movement of DRC citizens towards Angola, according to official data from the authorities of both countries and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
1. Situation update
This Weekly Bulletin focuses on selected acute public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African Region. The WHO Health Emergencies Programme is currently monitoring 66 events in the region. This week’s edition covers key new and ongoing events, including:
Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in Benin

13,323 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) comprising 6,778 women and 6,545 men received monthly food rations in Mantapala Settlement, Luapula Province.
701 new asylum-seekers arrived in June - 558 from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 117 Burundi, 24 Somalia and two were of other nationalities. New arrivals are accommodated in Mantapala Settlement.

Dundo - Angola's ministers of Defense, Salviano de Jesus Sequeira, and Social Action, Family and Woman Promotion, Faustina Fernandes Alves, started assessing this Monday, in eastern Lunda Norte, the current situation of the Democratic Republic of Congo refugees.
The visit of the Angolan officials comes after at least 8,000 refugees out of the overall 23,600 located in Lóvua, eastern Lunda Norte, abruptly decided to walk out of Angola.
In Dundo city, the refugees walked an overall distance of 80 to 90 kilometers towards Angola/DRC border.
1. Situation update
The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues. In the past week, 68 new confirmed EVD cases with an additional 43 deaths have been reported from 13 health zones across the two affected provinces. Most (59%) of the new cases reported in the past seven days were from Beni (n=29) and Mandima (n=11) Health Zones.

During the reporting period, IOM provided kits for shelter assistance to over 100 households at the Eliya displacement site in Tanganyika Province, after fires ravaged a large portion of the shelters.
Between 18 and 31 July, a total of 12 additional POE/POCs in North Kivu and Ituri Provinces from 71 to 83 POE/POCs.
Promoting good collaboration with local government is important
Present in more than 134 countries, the UN Refugee Agency works closely with host governments to protect and assist refugees and to find long-term solutions to their problems. Even before UNHCR and other relief organizations are on the scene, host communities are the first provider of support to refugees and asylum-seekers.
A good collaboration is important and in the Angolan municipality of Lóvua, humanitarian workers have implemented this to maximum effect.
The drought crisis in southern Angola continues to deteriorate with an estimated 2.3 million people affected, including 491,131 children under the age of five.
Circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (VDPV2) type 2 outbreak in Cambulo district, Lunda Norte province, was confirmed on 13 June 2019.
With UNICEF support, a polio outbreak vaccination campaign took place in the province of Lunda Norte reaching over 424,560 children.
Le 11 juin, une réunion transfrontalière a eu lieu entre les Gouvernements du Burundi et de la RDC, ainsi que le HCR, à Uvira, SudKivu. La réunion a discuté du rapatriement des réfugiés burundais vivant en RDC, dans l’attente de la signature d’un Accord Tripartite.
Depuis le 6 juin, une flambée de violences a donné lieu à des déplacements massifs en Province de l’Ituri. Le HCR et OIM ont noté plus de 110.000 nouvelles arrivées dans les sites de PDI entre le 31 mai et le 20 juin. De plus, 8.647 personnes ont fui vers l’Ouganda en juin.
On 11 June, a cross-border meeting was held between the Governments of Burundi and DRC, and UNHCR, in Uvira, South Kivu. The meeting discussed the repatriation of Burundian refugees living in DRC, pending the signing of a Tripartite Agreement.
Since 6 June, a flare-up of violence has led to massive new displacements in Ituri Province.
UNHCR and IOM recorded over 110,000 new arrivals in IDP sites between 31 May and 20 June. In addition, 8,647 people fled to Uganda in June.
1. Situation update
The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in Democratic Republic of the Congo continues at a similar transmission intensity to previous weeks. Since our last external situation report, with data reported up to 28 July 2019, 92 new confirmed EVD cases with an additional 59 deaths have been reported across the two affected provinces. There are currently no confirmed cases of EVD outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
