Climate change represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet today. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries, climate change is a major threat to sustainable development and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The combined effects of climate change, increased global population and income growth, among others, threaten to affect food and water resources that are critical for livelihoods in SSA.

- Satellite imagery indicate timely onset of seasonal rains in most parts of the SADC Region....Current reports indicate that seasonal rains had started on time in most parts of the Region. However, nearly a month delay was observed in parts of eastern Zambia, eastern South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while main rains are yet to start in northern Mozambique and parts of southern Tanzania.

- Generally normal rains received by the end of November 2010 and also expected during December - February 2011 period....

- SADC cereal production estimates indicate a 12% increase over last season... Latest estimates indicate a regional cereal (i.e. maize, wheat, rice and sorghum/millet) production of 35.55 million tonnes, which is 12% higher than the 2009 final harvest of 31.83 million tonnes and 32% higher than the 5-year average of 26.84 million tonnes.

The current growing season is expected to give an above average maize yield in most countries of the Southern Africa region.
Swaziland performs best with yields expected to be +18% relative to the previous 5-year average. Most other countries as Angola (+7%), Lesotho (+3%), Malawi (+3%), Mozambique (+8%), South Africa (+7%), Zambia (+4%) and Zimbabwe (+7%) have good yield prospects.
