As of 31 October 2019, 890,044 Congolese refugees are being hosted in African countries. From 1 January to 31 October 2019 alone, some 84,221 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in refugee flows to Uganda.

UNHCR together with 63 humanitarian and development partners launched the revised 2019-2020 Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) on 30 June 2019 to help respond to the needs of Congolese refugees in Africa.

19 Dec 2019 description

The first organised convoy of voluntary repatriation of Congolese refugees from Angola left Lòvua settlement for DRC on 9 October. As of 31 October, 844 persons were voluntarily repatriated to DRC in three convoys to Tshikapa and Kamonia, Kasai Province. 4,127 Central African refugees confirmed their intention to voluntarily return to the Central African Republic (CAR) from Sud Ubangi Province. Among them, 3,444 wished to return immediately. UNHCR will start repatriations in November.

UNHCR will launch the voluntary repatriation of Central African refugees in mid-November. An estimated 4,000 refugees will be repatriated. Three return zones were identified as safe for voluntary repatriations to CAR: Bangui, Ombella M’Poko and Lobaye.

CONTEXT

The Mayukwayukwa refugee settlement encompasses 16,16700 hectares. It was established in 1966 and is located in Western Province of Zambia, about 75km away from Kaoma District. As of 30 September 2019, Mayukwayukwa settlement had a population of 15,190 refugees and “former refugees” from Rwanda and Angola, Burundi, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

As of 31 August 2019, 886,881 Congolese refugees and asylum seekers are being hosted in several African countries. From 1 January to 31 August 2019 alone, some 61,652 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in the flows to Uganda.

Since 18 August, thousands of Congolese refugees left Angola to come back to DRC. A Tripartite Agreement was subsequently signed on 23-24 August between UNHCR and the Angola and DRC Governments, to start an organized Voluntary Repatriations movement.

In Kasenyi, Ituri Province, UNHCR and partner CARITAS continued the construction of collective hangars to respond to the arrival of some 4,300 IDPs. So far, 21 hangars are occupied by 252 households. In addition, 333 individual shelters were finalized.

More than twenty years after his mother walked through a minefield here, Prince Harry is today following her steps through the town of Huambo in central Angola. Although Huambo is unrecognisable from the place Diana saw. No longer a dangerous, deserted minefield, it’s now a bustling community, where people shop, eat and children go to school.

UNHCR and partners are speeding up groundwork for the voluntary repatriation of 4,000 Central African refugees located in camps in Sud Ubangi Province, following a Tripartite Meeting held on 5 July between UNHCR and the governments of DRC and CAR.

From 23 to 25 July in Lóvua settlement (Angola), a first crossborder meeting took place between UNHCR’s DRC and Angola offices, to discuss the voluntary repatriation of DRC refugees from Angola.
