Kuito 12/13 - Some USD 219,000 were invested this year in the central Bie Province by the Spanish Red Cross (SRC) in socio-professional actions for abandoned youths and traumatised by the armed conflict.

This information was given on Monday in Kuito city by the director of SRC, Vicente Ruiz, stating that among other activities carried out in the current year there is training of 70 youths in carpentry, fashion and sewing, electronics, metalworking, cookery, masonry, as well as family planning and natural medicine, in a period between four to six months.

Luanda, 11/08 - UNICEF intends to rehabilitate 24 schools and build 12 latrines in the districts of Chitato, Cambulo and Lucapa, in northern Lunda-Norte province, a note delivered to Angop says.
According to the note on the humanitarian situation in Angola, UNICEF also held an upgrading training for 288 primary teachers in matters of Hiv/Aids.

According to the same source, the UN organization also constructed two schools in central Bie province.

Luanda, 11/03 - A professional training centre, with the capacity for 250 people, divided in two periods, will be inaugurated on November 08 at Ramiros ward, Samba district, in Luanda, aimed at upgrading former combatants and their families, for their integration in the employment market.

According to the provincial director of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security (MAPESS), Venceslau de Matos, the institution, with eight class-rooms, will provide courses on construction, agriculture, sewing, metalwork, electricity, piping, confectionery and baking, and carpentry.

Since April 2002, close to four million internally displaced Angolans have gone home following the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the governing MPLA and UNITA, which marked the end of 27 years of civil war. However, a joint IDP assessment carried out by the United Nations and the Angolan government found that there are still more than 91,000 people who remain displaced as a result of the war. They are located in Cabinda, Huila, Kuando Kubango, Luanda and Moxico provinces. In Cabinda the massive presence of Angolan armed forces is an obstacle to the return of the displaced.

September 8, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development today signed a US$10 million loan agreement with the Republic of Angola to help rehabilitate and expand the 300-bed Luanda Hospital. Located in Palanca, 10km from Luanda City, the hospital was originally constructed as a unit for tuberculosis patients. The project will upgrade it to a provincial facility for general health care.
