1.Situation update

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in Democratic Republic of the Congo continues.

Since our last external situation report (data reported by 14 July 2019), 91 new confirmed EVD cases with an additional 75 deaths have been reported across the two affected provinces. We continue to observe sustained local transmission with a large number of cases in Beni Health Zone. In addition, cases continue to be exported from Beni to other health zones via the movement of cases and their contacts.

Saurimo - The placement of 30 experts (doctors and staff of the National Civil Protection and Fire Brigade) trained in the border area with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to contain Ebola is among the measures adopted, as from Monday by the health authorities Lunda Sul province.

Angola, with a territorial extension of 1,246,700 kilometers, shares 2,511 km of border with DR Congo.

The outbreak, which hits the neighboring country, is the third in recent years, and Angolan health authorities have long been prepared to deal with a possible health emergency.

As long as the landmines stay in the ground, Angola's economic development will remain severely hindered in rural areas.

  • In Central African Republic, a series of previously-detected/reported VDPV2s have now been officially classified as ‘circulating’. Since initial detection of the viruses in May, the country had already operationally considered these viruses to represent an outbreak and implemented emergency outbreak response and declared the event to be a national public health emergency.

  • A cVDPV2 originating in Jigawa, Nigeria, continues to spread. Genetically-linked virus has been confirmed from an environmental sample in Ghana.

Highlights

Almost half of the countries in Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESAR) have been affected by cholera outbreaks since the beginning of 2019. More than 12,102 cholera / AWD cases including 51 deaths have been reported in 10 countries in the region, with an average Case Fatality Rate of 0.4%, since the beginning of 2019. These countries include; Angola, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mozambique accounts for 58.1% (7,034) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Kenya at 23% (2,789).

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) plans to empower the Election Management Bodies in the region as a strategy to lessen incidents of violence that results from the electoral processes.

Amb. Zachary Muburi-Muita, the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) said the 12-member states in the Great Lakes region have committed to strengthening the capacities of political players especially those of the Election Management Bodies (EMBs) to increase acceptance of election outcomes.

John, Felly, Antonique, August and Martin, siblings aged between 6 and 21, were separated from their family when conflict broke out in their home in Kananga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They fled to northern Angola. ICRC Protection Delegate, Silvia Aquino was part of the team that traveled with the five siblings from Lóvua refugee camp to the DRC in the family reunification process.

• Based on the results of the 2019 Regional Vulnerability Assessment and Analysis (RVAA), it is estimated that 41 million people will be food insecure in the peak lean season, of which 9 million people require immediate assistance (Table 1).

• Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia account for 75% of the total number needing immediate assistance.

• In Eswatini and Lesotho, 20% and 24% of the rural population are in need of immediate assistance.

  • A circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) has been confirmed in China. It is genetically linked to a VDPV2 isolated from an environmental sample from Xinjiang province, collected on 18 April 2018. WHO is continuing to evaluate the situation and stands ready to support the ongoing investigation and risk assessment by national authorities.
