As natural disasters threaten the most vulnerable people in the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region, the EU is providing €7 million in humanitarian aid to increase the capacity of communities and authorities to prepare for and respond to disasters. This aid is in addition to the approximately €17 million in EU humanitarian assistance given this year to help people hit by cyclones Idai and Kenneth in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Comoros, and people affected by food shortages in Zimbabwe.

As of 31 May 2019, 856,043 Congolese refugees are being hosted in African countries. From 1 January to 31 May 2019 alone, some 38,812 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in refugee flows to Uganda.

UNHCR together with 56 humanitarian and development partners launched the 2019-2020 Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) on 11 December 2018 to help respond to the needs of Congolese refugees in Africa.

Ondjiva - At least 460 million Kwanzas were made available by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to assist the 857,443 people affected by the drought in the province of Cunene since October 2018.

The information was released on Thursday in Ondjiva at a meeting with local partners, by the UNICEF representative in Angola, Abubacar Mamadbhay Soltan, noting that the amount is intended for programs related to access to water and sanitation, nutrition, education and child protection.

Lubango - European Union spent Euros 12 million on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) programmes to assist more than 800,000 vulnerable families in the provinces of Huíla, Namibe and Cunene, as part of Resilience, Food and Nutrition Security in Angola (FRESAN).

FRESAN studies conducted in 2017 points to 1.1 million people as being affected by drought as a result of climate change, in those province.

The figure is accounted for 12 percent of the rural population of Huíla, 99% in Namibe and 97 % in Cunene.

• As part of World Vaccination month, 4,244 children (6months-14years) were vaccinated against measles through the RRMP mechanism

• During the month of April, 46,275 persons were provided with essential household items, and shelter materials

• Ebola outbreak: as of 14 April 2019, 1,264 total cases of Ebola, 1,198 confirmed cases and 748 deaths linked to Ebola have been recorded in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri.

The Global Humanitarian Overview published on 4 December announced funding requirements of $21.9 billion for 21 Humanitarian Response Plans and the Venezuela Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan. By the end of May, the requirements had reached $26.42 billion. The change in requirements since last month is mainly due to the finalization of the Sudan HRP ($1.15 billion) and a $103.7 million increase for Mozambique.

• Executive Director (ED) Henrietta Fore visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo to see first-hand the extent of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
UNICEF’s ED and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock, highlighted the urgent need of funds to meet the needs of children, families, and vulnerable communities.
The two officials visited a women’s care center in Goma, displacement camps in Bunia, and Ebola treatment facilities in Beni and Butembo.
