• 1 687 demandeurs d’asile congolais ont été enregistrés durant le mois d’août portant à 5 745 le nombre de demandeurs d’asile congolais enregistrés depuis le début de cette année 2013 (contre 3 489 personnes pour la même période en 2012).
UNHCR operational highlights
• 1,687 Congolese asylum-seekers were registered in Burundi in August 2013, bringing the total number of Congolese asylum seekers registered since the beginning of 2013 to 5,745 individuals (they were 3,489 persons at the same period in 2012).
Eastern Africa host to 8.52 million displaced people
As of October 2012, there were 8,515,310 people displaced in Burundi, (eastern) DRC, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Of these, 2,041,675 are refugees and 6,473,635 are internally displaced persons (IDPs). Starting August 2012, the coverage of this report has been extended to include Sudan and South Sudan, which as of the end of September 2012 were host to an estimated 1,935,000 IDPs and 349,000 refugees.

(a) Humanitarian operations in the region affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami on 26 December, 2004, have entered the recovery and reconstruction phase as WFP continues to assist more than 1.345 million people across the region.
(b) With bottlenecks hampering the distribution of aid and causing unrest, Sri Lanka's President has ordered administrators to deliver entitlements to at least 70 per cent of people affected by the tsunami by February 7.
The number of people in need of food assistance due to the Indian Ocean Tsunami is estimated at 2 million and WFP is seeking USD 256 million from donors to feed them.
Fatalities in Indonesia from the Tsunami are now estimated at more than 160,000 as government authorities add figures for missing people to the total.
In Southern Africa during the hungry season, WFP is monitoring the impact of both drought and floods on food security and vulnerability to food security.

BURUNDI: SUCCESS OF ELECTIONS CONTINGENT ON DISARMAMENT AND MILITARY DISCIPLINE
Despite numerous delays dating back since Burundi's largest rebel group the FDD entered into a peace agreement with the government in November 2003, the process of demobilization and reintegration of both former rebel groups and the national army is scheduled to begin at the end of this month.
