Outlook Highlights

  • Normal to above – normal rainfall is expected over the continental SADC countries.

  • Most of Madagascar is expected to receive above-normal to normal total rainfall

  • Heavy rainfall is forecast and is expected to bring relief to the dryness across southern Africa during the last next week of December 2011.

  • Assessments by the end of October 2011 indicated that the 2011/12 rainy season had not commenced in most parts of the region except for a few isolated areas. Planting rains are mostly expected in November in the Region.

  • Latest rainfall forecasts indicate that most parts of the Region may receive normal to above normal rains during the period November 2011 to January 2012. Should this be realized and farmers are able to timely access inputs, the Region may have another good harvest in 2012.

Despite its abundant resources and a visible degree of political stabilisation, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is among the world's poorest countries, being ranked at 168 out of 182 countries in the 2010 Human Development Index. In the Global Needs Assessment (GNA) vulnerability index and Crisis index, it has one of the highest ratings; Gross Domestic Product per capita in 2008 was estimated at USD 300, a 57% drop since 2007.

Over the past 50 years there have been significant population movements throughout the Great Lakes region and in and out of DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), largely as a result of the Rwandan genocide, the conflict in Burundi and the instability over the past 50 years in many parts of DRC. As a consequence these countries in the Great Lakes region host a total refugee population of 374,700:

NEW YORK, 22 September 2011 (IRIN) - The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) has launched a scorecard to improve the fight against malaria on the African continent.

“This,” said Agnes Bingwaho, Rwanda’s Health Minister, holding up the laminated scorecard, “is something that will help Africa make progress.”

Updated quarterly, it provides information from each country on policies formulated, preventative measures initiated, money spent, lives saved and lost.
