Overview

Arrivals in the Mediterranean from 01 January until 30 June 2017 total 102,847 (Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus, including arrivals to the Canary Islands and by land to Spain). This compares to 231,075 for the same period in 2016. In the first half of the year, 9,286 persons arrived in Greece by sea (158,377 arrived during same period in 2016, a decrease by 94%).

HIGHLIGHTS AND STATISTICS

  • The estimated refugee/migrant population in Serbia for the first time since February/March again rose above 2,000 to 2,200, half of which are sheltered in governmental facilities (below table refers). Unless reception, processing of asylum-claims and relocation in/by EU/Greece improves expediently, a continued increase of the needs and numbers of refugees in Serbia is to be anticipated.

  • Some 26% of an estimated 300 irregular arrivals per day were encountered/assisted by UNHCR and partners near entry points, including 45% arriving from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and 55% from Bulgaria.

  • The number of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants resting in Belgrade every day rose above 1,000 with about half encountered/assisted in the city centre and up to 530 sheltered by the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration (SCRM) in Asylum Centre (AC) of Krnjaca.

  • A number of events were organized in all sites to mark the World Refugee Day, on 20 June, UNHCR also opened a photo exhibition “UNHCR in Serbia: 40 Years of Assistance and Cooperation” in Belgrade marking the 40 years anniversary of UNHCR presence in the country.

  • The number of average daily refugee arrivals fell from close to 8,000 two months ago and some 3,000 a month ago to below 1,850.

  • The number of arrivals into Serbia from Bulgaria further decreased, with an average of 63 asylumseekers arriving daily across the entire stretch of this border. Around 250 asylum-seekers were assisted in Belgrade on average each day.

  • On 17 December, Minister Aleksandar Vulin opened a new Refugee Aid Point (RAP) in Miratovac, 1.2 km from the border with fYRo Macedonia. Together with the Ambassador of Norway, Minister Vulin also opened the first phase of the Preševo Tobacco factory renovation, increasing the heated overnight shelter capacity of the Reception Centre (RC) in Preševo by 120 beds.
