- 40,603 refugees and migrants have crossed the border into fyR Macedonia during the reporting period 14 – 20 October with a daily average of 5,800. On 18 October the number peaked with 10,005 refugees and migrants; an all-time high. Since UNHCR began monitoring the departures from Gevgelija on 1 July 2015 more than 365,654 refugees and migrants have departed.

On 7 October the number peaked with 7,816 refugees and migrants. Since UNHCR began monitoring the departures from Gevgelija on 1 July 2015 more than 325,000 refugees and migrants have departed.

  • 32,486 refugees and migrants have crossed the border into fyR Macedonia during the reporting period 30 September – 06 October with a daily average of more than 4,600. The number of Afghans continue to be high and now constitutes 14% of the total new arrivals up from 11% during last reporting period according to the statistics of the Ministry of Interior. Since UNHCR began monitoring the departures from Gevgelija on 1 July 2015 more than 282,000 refugees and migrants have departed.

■ The average daily influx of refugees in September is more than 5,000 refugees and during the reporting period from 09 - 15 September the figure has risen to above 6,000 per day with an all-time high of 8,660 alone on 13 September. Assistance with food, NFIs, counselling, medical and psychosocial services, child friendly spaces and monitoring have been stepped up and registration is ongoing 24/7.

■ The train prices have increased considerably by 150%. Advocacy efforts are ongoing to revert this decision.

UNHCR in Iraq

UNHCR has been present in Iraq since the 1980s. Working with the Government of Iraq (GoI), UNHCR protects and assists people of concern (PoCs) including refugees, asylum seekers, stateless people, returnees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in all 18 governorates. Iraq is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. However, the country has hosted and assisted, with UNHCR’s support, refugees of Palestinian, Iranian, Turkish, and Syrian origin.

Introduction

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and find solutions to refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.

Refugees /Asylum Seekers

The number of (non-Syrian) registered refugees and asylum seekers is now 42,683. Between June and August, a total of 871 refugees and asylum seekers mainly from Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran were registered with UNHCR Iraq. A large number (29,550) are in the KR, while 12,640 are in the centre and 493 are in southern Iraq. UNHCR provides protection and assistance to the refugees while seeking durable solutions to their situation, through voluntary repatriation, resettlement or local integration.
