April saw an increased number of refugees and migrants in UnaSana Canton (USC) and in particular of unaccompanied and separated children and families.

Protection outreach efforts have been intensified and a dedicated Working Group established in USC to coordinate protection efforts outside of centres.

Measles, mumps, and rubella, immunization of refugee and migrant children commenced in April, with the support of the WHO, UNICEF, and partners.

Vaša Prava and UNHCR supported asylum seekers (who registered their claim over nine months ago) to become legally eligible for employment in BiH.
On 2 February, the Una-Sana Canton authorities placed a restriction on the entry of newly arriving single men to the Miral and Bira TRCs.
Approval from the Government of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton is still pending for refugee and migrant children in the Salakovac Reception Center to access primary school.

134 refugee and migrant children, from House of All, the Žene sa Une safe house, and the Sedra,
Borići, Ušivak, and Bira TRCs were enrolled in primary education.
IOM opened the Borići TRC on 3 January and the first 136 refugees and migrants moved in. The Borići TRC is predominantly for families with children.
Health care services in the Ušivak TRC are now provided by the Sarajevo Cantonal Health Institute through the Hadžići Primary Health Centre, with the support of DRC.

"This 17th Edition of To Walk the Earth In Safety summarizes the United States' CWD programs in 2017. CWD assistance provides the United States with a powerful and flexible tool to help partner countries manage their stockpiles of munitions, destroy excess small arms and light weapons (SA/LW) and clear explosive hazards such as landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and UXO. Our assistance also helps countries destroy or enhance security of their man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and their threat to civilian aviation, in addition to other weapons and munitions.

Highlights

  • In 2018, some 141,500 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean migration routes. On average one in every four was a child. This included an estimated 6,000 unaccompanied and separated children.

  • In 2018, UNICEF-supported child protection activities in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Germany reached over 28,000 children, while another 18,900 children benefitted from UNICEF-supported formal and nonformal education activities.

Accommodation capacity increased by over 2,000 spaces and large voluntary transfers moved the majority refugees and migrants from informal sites.
Restrictions on freedom of movement remain in place in UnaSana Canton and significantly limit access to services and rights and pose operational obstacles.
The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on Migration and Refugees visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in the month, including Una-Sana Canton.

Highlights
- By September 2018, some 89,000 refugees and migrants, almost a quarter of whom children, arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean migration routes. Most children arrived in Greece and Spain.
- Between January and September 2018, nearly 16,700 children benefitted from UNICEF specialized child protection support in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Germany. With the start of the school year, 13,810 children were also reached with UNICEF-supported formal and non-formal education activities.

• Between January and June 2018, 50,800 refugees and migrants, including some 11,200 children, arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean. While Italy has recorded an 85 per cent decrease in sea arrivals in 2018 compared to the same period last year, Greece and Spain have seen a spike of 50 and 90 per cent respectively.

  • So far this year more than 231,000 people crossed the Mediterranean. While the trend of decreased arrivals through the Eastern Mediterranean continued during the month of June, with only 1,500 new arrivals in Greece, some 22,250 people were rescued in Italian waters during the same period of time.

Highlights

• Since January 2015, more than 1,200,000 people crossed the Mediterranean. From late 2015 and onwards there has been a steady increase in the proportion of children among refugees and migrants not only on the Eastern Mediterranean, but also on the more dangerous and perilous Central Mediterranean migration route. Currently this proportion stands at 35 per cent of all arrivals in 2016. In addition, it is estimated that almost 500 children lost their lives in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean since the beginning of 2016.

  • Since the beginning of 2016, almost 184,500 people have crossed the Mediterranean to seek safety and protection in Europe. Of them, 154,914 arrived on Greek shores. Since last March, there has been a significant reduction in the flow of refugee and migrant populations from northern Greece due to the enforcement of more rigid border controls along with adoption of the EU-Turkey agreement.

  • In 2015, 1,014,836 people crossed the Mediterranean, arriving on Europe’s shores. One in four of all arrivals was a child, but in SouthEastern Europe this proportion is one in three.

  • The proportion of children amongst refugees and migrants continues to increase. In Serbia it currently stands at 35 per cent in comparison to 27 per cent in September, while in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia this ratio is 37 per cent compared to 23 per cent in September.
