  • The Government of Germany confirmed a USD 2.3 million contribution to the PRRO. This is the highest contribution received in recent history and will allow WFP to feed all 30,000 refugees under its assistance for approximately five months

  • Settlement authorities distributed 96 percent of reduced entitlements of rice and 92 percent of lentils in settlements, bridging the gap between deliveries to avoid a complete pipeline break.

Tehran, 2 August 2015 - The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) offices in Iran signed a Letter of Understanding on Sunday, 2nd August 2015 to cooperate on a number of areas namely Child Protection, Education, Health and Nutrition as well as emergency preparedness, to assist Afghan refugees in Iran.

COUNTRY STRATEGY:

WFP’s protracted relief and recovery operation (PRRO 200310) supporting the food needs of refugees in Iran, which began in mid-2013, pursues two key objectives: (1)
Improved food consumption of vulnerable refugee households; and (2) Increased access to education and human capital development for refugee girls and youths.
WFP targets Afghan and Iraqi refugees living in settlements with general food distribution on a monthly basis and based on their vulnerability.

"The international aid community in Iran is very small," says Kazemi, "even though we have the most protracted refugee crisis in the world. It's now over three decades. At its peak, we had three million registered refugees. Now, we have one million registered and many more unregistered."

Despite efforts to facilitate the repatriation of refugees living in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a significant number of poor and food-insecure refugee households continue to require humanitarian support, including WFP food assistance. In 2012, 840,500 Afghan refugees and 45,000 refugees from Iraq were registered in Iran. Although the majority of the refugees live in urban areas, about 30,000 live in 19 refugee settlements, with very limited livelihood options.
