"This 17th Edition of To Walk the Earth In Safety summarizes the United States' CWD programs in 2017. CWD assistance provides the United States with a powerful and flexible tool to help partner countries manage their stockpiles of munitions, destroy excess small arms and light weapons (SA/LW) and clear explosive hazards such as landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and UXO. Our assistance also helps countries destroy or enhance security of their man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and their threat to civilian aviation, in addition to other weapons and munitions.

Dushanbe - The UN Migration Agency (IOM) has organized a first regional forum bringing together counter trafficking government officials from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to foster regional cooperation and improve the identification, referral and reintegration of victims of trafficking in the region.

The two-day forum, which began yesterday in the Tajik capital Dushanbe, is part of the multi-year program: “_Combating Human Trafficking in Persons_” (CTIP), funded by USAID and implemented by IOM.

I. The last winter season (2017/2018), was mild as compared to 2017 but with severe cold temperatures. Minus 14 degree was reported in Badakhshan, Bamyan, Daykundi, Paktyia and Ghazni while temperature in Kabul went to minus 8 degree during the winter. There were few incidents of avalanches and limited snow fall.

This evaluation provides an independent assessment of the European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations’ (DG ECHO’s) interventions in the humanitarian health sector during the period 2014 to 2016. The evaluation, launched by DG ECHO in November 2016, was carried out by ICF Consulting Services Ltd, with specialist inputs from humanitarian aid and health experts.

Situation

  • More than three decades of war, civil unrest, insurgent activity and recurring natural disasters have contributed to chronic humanitarian need in Afghanistan. As of November, approximately 360,600 people have been internally displaced due to conflict, an estimated 503,300 vulnerable people have returned or were deported from Iran and Pakistan, and natural disasters have affected roughly 111,300 people in 2017, according to the UN.
