WFP assisted 641,000 people with 6,600 metric tons of food and over US$900,000 in cash transfers to cover food needs in May.

WFP has exceeded 2 million people registered in its digital assistance platform SCOPE.

US$15.34 million is the net funding shortfall for the next six months (June – November 2019).

To date in 2019, 2,320 registered refugees voluntarily returned to Afghanistan, out of which 1,597 returned from Pakistan, 673 from Iran and 52 from other countries. In 2018, 15,699 registered refugees voluntarily returned from neighboring and non-neighboring countries.

132,171 individuals have been displaced by conflict in 2019 and profiled by OCHA as internally displaced persons (IDPs) in need of protection and assistance. In 2018, 343,341 individuals were newly displaced by conflict.

09/05/2019 Kabul The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Union (EU) have joined forces to support the development of the first ever Geographical Indication (GI) system in Afghanistan.

Thanks to this new agreement, the Afghan Government will be able to set up a national GI system that will help to facilitate increased income generation for smallholder producers and agribusinesses in the prioritized GI value chain.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

  • Heavy rains caused flash flooding on 27, 28 and 29 March in six provinces - Faryab, Balkh, Jawzjan, and Sar-e-Pul province in the Northern Region, and Hirat and Badghis in the Western Region. While assessments are ongoing, an estimated 17,000 people have been affected with Balkh and Hirat suffering the worst impacts. These are the first major floods in the Northern Region in the season.
