CERF GIVES OVER $1 BILLION TO HELP THE MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE WORLDWIDE

The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has now allocated more than one billion dollars for humanitarian aid around the world since it was launched in March 2006. An allocation on 13 October 2008 of $202,714 for nutrition and supplementary feeding for women and children in Tajikistan, which is suffering from chronic food insecurity made worse by a poor harvest and soaring food prices, took the total allocations beyond the one billion dollar level.

After several years of consecutive drought, Northern Afghanistan is once more hit by below-normal precipitations and extreme heat. This year, the shock is particularly worrying since it comes after a harsh winter and a significant increase of the food prices all over Asia. The cumulative effect of this situation has a direct bearing on most of the households which rely on agriculture and livestock for their income and food needs.

Afghanistan

The CO is facing critical shortfalls, where total 95,000 mt of mixed commodities are required until the end of 2008. Of which, 25,000 mt are urgently required for prepositioning for winter.

Chad

In early August, WFP released about 79 mt of food commodities to assist some 880 HIV/AIDS affected people in Moundou. The assistance targeted patients under ARV treatment covering their food needs for 30 days.

Afghanistan

WFP emergency food distribution is ongoing to battle affected families in Arghandab district of Kandahar province. Thus far 4,200 battle affected families received nearly 500 mt food since June. The said families were displaced due to military operation conducted against AGEs in the district in June 2008.

Chad

The designated officer has appointed WFP HOSO in Iriba as the Area Security Coordinator in Iriba.

(New York/Geneva, 16 July): Six months into 2008, United Nations agencies, the International Organisation for Migration, and 239 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) still require USD 3.4 billion to respond to the world's most severe crises through this year's Consolidated and Flash Appeals. Overall humanitarian funding requirements for 2008 for the 34 countries covered by these 11 Consolidated Appeals and six Flash Appeals have risen from $5.4 billion at the start of the year to $6.5 billion now.
