Preface

The last several years have been exciting and eventful for UNDP, as the organization repositions itself to meet the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the demands of UN Member States to reform the UN development system. Both are about significant changes aimed at a new course for development, one that supports people and the planet, and that meets the challenges and opportunities of our complex, rapidly changing world.

These critical connections have been established through a partnership between Afghanistan, the European Union and UNDP. From its headquarters in Tajikistan, the Border Management Northern Afghanistan (BOMNAF) project has been working for nearly a decade to build the physical and social infrastructure, for a strong and peaceful Afghanistan.

Kunduz, 8 March 2016 – UNDP is proud to announce that local stations Sheasta Radio and Kaihan Radio will both restart broadcasting today in Kunduz.

Shaesta, a radio network dedicated to women’s issues, and Kaihan, which serves youth, were both looted during the takeover of Kunduz last September, and their staff were forced into hiding. Previously they reached Kunduz and neighbouring provinces with information on how to access healthcare and education, as well as women’s legal and political rights.

Kabul – UN Women and UNDP today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to harmonize projects and streamline operations, fundraising and reporting.

“This agreement sees UNDP and UN Women join forces to ride the current wave of high-level political commitment to gender equality,” said Ercan Murat, Country Director for UNDP Afghanistan. September 2011 – Children are one of the most vulnerable groups in Afghanistan. Affected by the conflict, they have limited access to education, security, sufficient food and clean water. Within the justice system, children are afforded limited additional protection, and the existing formal alternatives to detention or pro-active approaches to dealing with delinquency are not routinely implemented.

Japan Supports the Extension of Regional Initiative for Sustainable Economy (RISE) Programme

In continuation of its generous support to the Regional Initiative for Sustainable Economy Programme, known as RISE, the Government of Japan has agreed to extend the duration of the programme until June 2007. This USD 12.7-million programme is fully funded by the Government of Japan under the Peace Building Grant Aid scheme, and has been in operation in Balkh, Nangarhar and Kandahar provinces.

They're bright, they're shiny, and their intergalactic design is a salute to 1960's style-the latest addition to Kabul's streetscape is 300 brightly coloured public telephone booths. Aside from being eye candy amidst the dust of the city streets, the glossy egg-shaped boxes represent a significant accomplishment for communications technology in Afghanistan.

Like many public services in Afghanistan, the public phone system had become decrepit, dilapidated and entirely unusable over the last few decades.
