Appeal history:

● 22 May 2015: CHF 296,549 was released from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to meet the immediate needs of 10,000 migrants arriving in the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Chios, Lesvos, Samos and Crete.

● 24 July 2015: DREF Operations Update was issued

● 2 September 2015: Emergency Appeal was launched for CHF 3.03 million to assist 45,000 beneficiaries, prioritising the islands of Lesvos, Samos, Kos, capital city of Athens and the border area between Greece and former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Description of the disaster Two years after the beginning of the migration crisis (in 2015), more than 62,000 migrants remain stranded in the mainland and islands of Greece, according to figures of 6 June 2017 of the Greek government2 . Out of those 62,000 migrants, some 34,000 are on the mainland, some 13,000 on the islands and almost 14,000 are accommodated in the housing scheme of UNHCR’s relocation programme.

As of 8 February 2017, there have been 11,233 new arrivals to Greece, Italy and Bulgaria, as countries of first arrival to Europe, including more than 9,000 to Italy. This is an increase for Italy of almost one third against the same period in 2016.

1. Summary

In November 2015, more than 1,000 Cuban nationals were reported to be camped out at the Paso Canoas border crossing with Panama. In view of requirements for entering the country and the fact that these migrants did not meet them, a significant amount of people began to congregate in this border community, taking to living in the streets while they waited for a solution to their immigration status. The Costa Rican government issued permits allowing migrants to enter the country and continue on their way to the United States.

Description of the disaster Around 13:40 local time (UTC +4:30) on 26 October 2015, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan province in the north-east region of Afghanistan. Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Baghlan and Kunar provinces were ranked the most affected provinces. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) coordinated the initial assessments in partnership with in-country humanitarian partners.

Latest developments on 7 March at 15:00 hours

The situation in Greece has deteriorated in the last days as new border restrictions are being imposed causing a major concentration of migrants in Idomeni and Athens. The number of women and children on the migrant routes are increasing and is a major factor to consider in terms of operational needs. It is reported that some 30,000 migrants are now being trapped in Greece.

The situation

As of today, more than 1,030,000 people are being reported to have crossed to Europe since the beginning of 2015. The main migratory entry point remains Greece, with almost 875,000 arrivals registered.

Demographically, we can still see a majority presence of adult males among the migrants on the move (49%), but we encounter more families, which is translated into an increasing number of children (31%) and women (19%).

Around 13:40 local time (UTC +4:30) on 26 October 2015, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan Province in the north-east region of Afghanistan. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicentre was 82 km southeast of Feyzabad in the Hindu Kush mountain range and at 213 km in depth. The quake’s impact was felt beyond Afghanistan as damages and casualties have been reported in the western part of Pakistan and minor damage in India.
