Global response in 2014

UNICEF and partners responded to 294 humanitarian situations of varying scales in 98 countries in 2014. This includes large-scale Level 3 responses for the crises in the Central African Republic, Iraq, the Philippines, South Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa

Some of the major highlights from 2014 include:

• UNICEF Country Offices responded to 294 humanitarian situations of varying scales in 98 countries. This includes the response to six Level 3 emergencies;

Snapshot 6 - 12 August

Central African Republic: The CAR President Catherine Samba-Panza named a Muslim as the new Prime Minister. Renewed clashes have displaced 20,000 people in Batafango (Ouham) since July and 17,000 people in Bambari (Ouaka) since June. A total of 890 security incidents were recorded in 2014, hampering humanitarian access.

  • The global humanitarian response in 2014 aims to reach at least 52 million people with essential life-saving assistance in 17 affected countries.

  • There has been significant advance in reducing disaster risk in the region since the adoption, in 2005, of the International Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005-2015.

  • Heavy rains on 2 February caused localized flooding in 13 districts in Hirat, three districts in Badghis and two districts in Farah provinces. Heavy snow fall in Ghor resulted in the closure all passes in the region, making road access a challenge.

  • Assessments have been completed in some areas and ongoing in Farah and Badghis, as well as in ten out of 13 districts of Hirat.

  • Security concerns are preventing teams from accessing the districts of Shindand and Farsi in Hirat;

  • IOM provided family kits, while CARE International provided four tents to six families, whose houses were damaged by the rain.

During the 10th replenishment of the Asian Development Fund (ADF XI), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and ADF donors agreed to pilot the Disaster Response Facility (DRF) in the ADF XI period, 2013–2016. ADB will report on the implementation progress of the DRF at the ADF XI midterm review, and discuss the future of the DRF with the ADB Board of Directors and ADF donors at the ADF XII negotiations.

• On Friday, 8 June, 2012, a heavy hailstorm damaged a number of houses in Ganjgal of Sarkani district, Kunar province.

• ANDMA’s initial unconfirmed reports indicate a woman was killed and five others of the same family sustained injuries.

• A house was destroyed and five others were damaged.

Beijing, 4 November 2010 - Senior government ministers and officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered in Beijing today for the High Level Meeting on Co-operation for Child Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region. The meeting, held from 4-6 November, is being hosted by the All China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The South Asia region is home to half of the world's population and is a region of great socio-economic contrasts as well as cultural and political diversity. The region includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and remains one of the most disadvantaged regions of the world. Situated on the most seismic-active crusts on earth, the frequency and magnitude of natural disasters in South Asia is high and continues to increase as a result of rapid and uncontrolled urbanization, deforestation and the effects of climate change.

On 13 September 2007, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Kimoon appointed Catherine Bragg of Canada as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Ms. Bragg has been the Director-General of the Humanitarian Assistance, Peace and Security Programme in the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) since 2004.
