Summary

More than 500 women and girls die in emergency settings every day due to complications arising from pregnancy and childbirth (UNFPA, 2018, p. 3). In 2017, an estimated 535 million children (nearly one in four of the world’s children) lived in countries affected by emergencies (UNICEF, 2017). This report provides examples of organisations working in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in emergency settings and some key technical resources.

Last year, IDMC recorded the highest levels of internal displacement by conflict and violence in a decade. We documented heart-breaking accounts of families escaping attacks and insecurity from Syria to the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan. As always, this displacement took place against a backdrop of chronic poverty and political instability, and was compounded by weak governance and response capacities, complex needs and vulnerabilities, and difficult humanitarian access.

Highlights

• Over 600,000 refugee children are now enrolled in formal education across Turkey (94% of target); of these, more than 356,600 refugee children have benefitted from a UNICEF-supported conditional cash transfer for education payment (110% of target).

• More than 109,000 refugees and migrants have accessed UNICEFsupported protection spaces across the country (73% of target), and over 34,000 children are participating in structured psychosocial support programmes (43% of target).

Highlights

• Between January and June 2018, 50,800 refugees and migrants, including some 11,200 children, arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean. While Italy has recorded an 85 per cent decrease in sea arrivals in 2018 compared to the same period last year, Greece and Spain have seen a spike of 50 and 90 per cent respectively.

The Community-Based Protection (CBP) and Urban Outreach Strategy (2017-2019) for Afghan Refugees in Pakistan was endorsed in July 2017. The overall goal of the CBP and Outreach Strategy is for Afghan refugees living in Pakistan to be empowered and their resilient capacity strengthened, enabling them to minimize their exposure to protection risks and improve their overall protection environment, with a special focus on the most vulnerable.

Highlights

• In May, UNICEF signed key partnerships with government and NGO partners to expand access to education and child protection services, including targeted interventions to prevent and respond to child marriage and child labour.

• Over 272,000 refugee children benefitted from a conditional cash transfer for education (CCTE) payment in May for attending school regularly in preceding months. To date, over 356,600 refugee children have received at least once CCTE payment since the programme’s launch in May 2017.
