A world away from the turkey and tinsel of an Antipodean Christmas, Australian Red Cross aid workers will be helping out across the globe in disaster, conflict and development zones this festive season.

Isha and her family tell their story to mark International Day of the Disappeared (30 August 2011). In the last year Australian Red Cross' Tracing Service has resolved the cases of more than 370 people separated by war, conflict or disaster.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale has rocked the Kashmir region of Pakistan with tremors felt as far away as Afghanistan and India.

Latest reports indicate that tens of thousands are feared dead and over 40,000 people are injured. The Pakistan Red Crescent immediately deployed 10 ambulances in the affected areas of Islamabad as well as medical teams to provide first aid.

The Australian Red Cross 'Afghanistan Humanitarian Crisis Appeal' was launched on 28 September 2001. The total amount raised thus far is approximately $346,000. This total includes the response to the appeal launched following a series of earthquakes in Nahrin (north of Kabul) on 25 March 2002. This money has been used to deploy specialist Australian Red Cross (ARC) delegates to Afghanistan, to work with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) or the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation).
