Korean sent an advance team of Army forces to Afghanistan on June 15, ahead of a main unit whose mission is to protect Korean aid workers in the war-torn country.

"The unit left for Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan from Seoul Airport [in Seongnam, Gyeonggi]," said a military official on condition of anonymity at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.

With regard to enormous loss of human lives caused by an avalanche near the Salang Pass in northern Afghanistan on February 8, the Government of the Republic of Korea has decidedto provide emergency relief supplies worth 100,000 dollars to support recovery efforts.

As of February 11, the avalanche has left 166 people dead and 125 injured, and about 2,600 people have been rescued.

A groundbreaking ceremony for facilities to greatly expand the activities of the Korean medical support and vocational training team in Bagram, Afghanistan, was held at the Bagram Airbase on June 24. The ceremony was attended by South Korean Ambassador to Afghanistan as well as many officials at the US Bagram Airbase and the Afghan government.

  1. In order to actively participate in the efforts of the international community on the reconstruction of Afghanistan, the Korean government has decided to send equipments such as motorcycles and ambulances, and to further extend the activities of the current Medical and Vocational Training Team.

    2. Since its inception in July 2008, the Korean Medical and Vocational Training Team in Afghanistan has successfully carried out its mission of providing necessary services to the local people within the Bagram Airbase.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) established a Public Officials Training Institute in Kabul as a part of Korea's efforts to reconstruct Afghanistan.

The opening ceremony, held on January 30, 2007, was attended by the Vice President of Afghanistan, Mr. Karim Khalili; Chairperson of Afghanistan's Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Service Commission, Dr. Ahmad Mushahid; Korean Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mr. Sung-Ju KangExecutive Director of KOICA, Mr. Tae-Yoon Ha; as well as other locals involved with the project.

The Government Investigation Committee for Reconstruction, Assistance and Establishment of Korean Diplomatic Mission in Afghanistan will visit Afghanistan from March 12 to 14, 2002.

The Committee is headed by Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism and Afghanistan Affairs Yoon Jee-joon, and consisted of officials from related ministries and government organizations such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Construction and Transportation, Korea International Cooperation Agency, and International Contractors Association of Korea.

  1. With regard to the recent crisis in Afghanistan, the Government of the Republic of Korea has decided to provide humanitarian aid for Afghan refugees and economic assistance to countries suffering from economic damages, worth US$ 12 million in total.

    2. The humanitarian aid for Afghan refugees will be provided through international organizations such as UNHCR, UNICEF and WFP. In terms of the economic assistance for countries inflicted by the influx of refugees and economic losses, details will be worked out through bilateral consultations with the corresponding governments.
