This week, 444 people arrived on the Aegean islands, an increase from last week’s 377 arrivals but a decrease from last year’s 502 arrivals during the same period.

BACKGROUND

The Community-Based Protection (CBP) and Urban Outreach Strategy (2017-2019) for refugees in Pakistan was endorsed in July 2017. The overall goal of the strategy is for refugees living in Pakistan to be empowered and their resilient capacity strengthened, enabling them to minimize their exposure to protection risks and improve their overall protection environment, with a special focus on the most vulnerable.

Overview

The Proof of Registration (PoR) card is an important protection tool that is issued by Government of Pakistan and provides temporary legal stay and freedom of movement for the 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan. All the PoR cards that expired at the end of 2015 have been extended through official notification until 30 June 2019*.

Population on the Islands

Some 14,300 refugees and migrants reside on the Aegean islands. The majority of the population on the Aegean islands are from Afghanistan (46%), Iraq (12%) and the State of Palestine (9%).

TRENDS AND KEY FIGURES

In March, just over 4,500 refugees and migrants entered Europe, primarily via Italy, Greece and Spain. Overall arrivals to Spain decreased by just over 26% compared with the previous month (1,006 versus 1,366) while arrivals through routes to Greece (3,159 versus 2,316) and Italy (262 versus 60) increase compared with the previous month. So far this year some 15,900 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to over 19,200 that arrived in the same period last year, marking a 17% decrease.

The UN Refugee Agency has been working in Ukraine since 1994 and established a country office the following year. A host country agreement was signed in September 1996.

Ukraine acceded to the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees and the 1967 Protocol in 2002. A 2011 law regulates the treatment of refugees and other persons of concern in Ukraine.

In 2013, Ukraine acceded to the two UN Conventions relating to the status of stateless persons (1954) and on the reduction of statelessness (1961).

  • UNHCR welcomed the Asylum Office of the Ministry of Interior ruling on 15 applications for asylum during March, granting protection to 11 and rejecting four. So far, during the first quarter of 2019, the Asylum Office recognised needs for international protection of 25 asylum seekers in Serbia, granting 11 refugee and 14 subsidiary status, which equals the total number of persons granted protection during the whole of last year. Amongst these 25 refugees, 20 benefitted from legal representation, and three from psychological assessments under the UNHCR project.
