In the Afghan capital city of Kabul, poverty is on the rise. Years of war, displacement, and a weak global economy have all contributed to an increase in the number of Afghan families that rely on charity to meet their basic needs.

What's more, a steady stream of refugees returning to the country has increased the number of slums in the city.

During the holy month of Ramadan, LIFE for Relief and Development sought to assist a number of families that suffer from poverty. In all, some 57 families (400 individuals) in and around Kabul were chosen to receive Ramadan food baskets.

The change in this approach will ensure a more efficient and effective program, and will lead to an increase in the support that orphans receive.

Under the new structure, orphans are sponsored directly by donors on a monthly basis.
