This past Ramadan was a very busy time for Life for Relief and Development. Life staff, volunteers, and partners were working hard to provide food to needy families, widows and orphans across the globe.

In Afghanistan, staff members from Life’s regional office in Kabul were successful in distributing food baskets to some 220 needy families. These food baskets were expected to provide each family with several weeks’ worth of food.

In an effort to improve the quality of life for the people of Afghanistan, Life for Relief and Development recently inaugurated two new water wells in rural areas of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Residents of these areas live in extreme poverty and either they do not have access to clean drinking water, or they cannot afford bottled water.

These two wells, each outfitted with mechanical pumps, are providing instance access to fresh water for hundreds of Afghans.

On the day of their inauguration, locals gathered at the wells to get a glimpse of the pumps in action.

In the Afghan capital city of Kabul, poverty is on the rise. Years of war, displacement, and a weak global economy have all contributed to an increase in the number of Afghan families that rely on charity to meet their basic needs.

What's more, a steady stream of refugees returning to the country has increased the number of slums in the city.

During the holy month of Ramadan, LIFE for Relief and Development sought to assist a number of families that suffer from poverty. In all, some 57 families (400 individuals) in and around Kabul were chosen to receive Ramadan food baskets.

LIFE recently reorganized the structure of its Orphan Sponsorship Program in Afghanistan. Instead of assisting orphans through the operation of boarding schools, the program now focuses on providing direct assistance to orphans who reside with relatives or others in private homes.

The change in this approach will ensure a more efficient and effective program, and will lead to an increase in the support that orphans receive.

Under the new structure, orphans are sponsored directly by donors on a monthly basis.

In Kabul, Laghman, and Nangahar, 763 families received packages of fresh Udhiyah meat.


Over 10,000 pounds of fresh meat was distributed to 2,300 poor Iraqi families, as well as a number of orphans, in the provinces of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, and Mosul.


Udhiyah meat was distributed to 580 families living in Palestinian refugee camps and isolated rural villages.


In the governorates of Tripoli and Sidon LIFE distributed Udhiyah meat to 130 needy families.

LIFE distributed food baskets to a total of 2,750 families(19,250 beneficiaries) in Afghanistan and Pakistan during the month of Ramadan. The distributions took place in Umari and Raghagan Refugee Camps in Pakistan, the Afghani Embassy in Peshawar, and the district of Mardan, where most of the people are living on less than one US dollar per day.

In addition to the food distribution to poor families, other food distribution events took place at LIFE's ORPHAN HIGH SCHOOLS in Laghman and Jalalabad. 1,100 families of the orphan students and teachers received Ramadan Food Packages.

LIFE distributed food packages to 11,500 refugees in Barkaly and Akhora Khattak Afghan refugee camps in Afghanistan. One package is enough for one family of 7-9 persons for two weeks. In addition, food packages were distributed to 8,630 beneficiaries in Pakistan in Dir / Swat district, Mardan district, as well as in the northern areas. Most of the beneficiaries are widows and elder people.

LIFE recently launched the Wheelchair Distribution Program in Afghanistan. Reports made by renowned organizations such as Human Rights Watch and the UN indicate that Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. This is the result of more than two decades of landmine use by numerous armies and factions. This fact has left 3% to 4% of the Afghani population disabled.

During the period from Feb 2nd to Feb 4th, 2003, LIFE held three Wheelchair Distribution Events in Afghanistan. The events took place in the provinces of Kunar, Nangrahar, and Laghman. Over 400 wheelchairs were distributed, out of which 250 were distributed personally to disabled individuals, whereas the rest were given to local municipalities and other associations such as the Public Health Directorate, the Afghan Red Crescent, the University Hospital in Nangrahar, and the Jalalabad airport.
