Kabul, Afghanistan: After decades of war, Afghanistan is gearing up for presidential elections on 20 August 2009. This will be the second democratic cycle the country has seen - and just as in 2004, UNV volunteers are heavily involved with the electoral process.

This time, however, it is Afghans themselves who are in charge of the elections. The primary vehicle through which the international community is supporting them is UNDP/ELECT, the 'Enhancing Legal and Electoral Capacity for Tomorrow' project.

Northern Afghanistan: "Things worked differently in other countries I have worked in," says Tuch, a UNV volunteer Electoral Outreach and Training Adviser with the UNDP/ELECT project in Afghanistan. "Here you have to find new ways to work with people. You need to put yourself in their shoes."

Tuch says he was inspired by the UNV volunteer Electoral Officers he saw working with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) mission during 1993. "I remember how happy I was to see them helping my country," he comments.

KABUL/BONN, 16 September 2005 - More than 130 United Nations Volunteers (UNV) working throughout Afghanistan are readying themselves for the second round of elections that will take place this Sunday.

Some 12 million registered Afghan voters will have the opportunity to head to the polls on 18 September to elect representatives to 34 provincial councils and to the country's lower house of parliament. An estimated 160,000 election officials will be involved on election day to ensure voters are able to cast their ballot in a safe and orderly manner.

Twenty-six year-old Madelene Carlsson of Sweden is a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) working in Afghanistan since August 2004. She is in charge of a two-year initiative that aims to establish a database on counter narcotics projects at the Counter Narcotics Ministry (CNM). With support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) this initiative is building the capacity of the CNM and enabling it to carry out its work in a more effective and powerful way.
