  • Authorities, UNHCR, and partners estimate that close to 7,000 refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants are presently in Serbia, with over 5,760 (i.e. 82%) accommodated in 15 governmental facilities (see chart), and the remainder sleeping rough in Belgrade City centre or at the border with Hungary.

  • Supporting access to better accommodation and services as well as the decongesting of Belgrade city centre, UNHCR and partners assisted 91 newly-registered asylum seekers with transport from Belgrade to Pirot.

  • Authorities, UNHCR, and partners encountered close to 7,000 refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants. Over 5,670 (i.e. 81%) were accommodated in governmental facilities (see chart), while the remainder were counted sleeping rough in Belgrade City centre or at the border with Hungary. With the centre in Pirot receiving its first residents this week, there are now 15 government centers sheltering refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.

  • Tragically, the 17 year old boy from Afghanistan who suffered very serious electric burns at Subotica train station (see Update 21-23 November) passed away on 26 November at the hospital in Novi Sad. His relatives living in Europe are liaising with authorities, UNHCR partner HCIT and the deceased’s family in Afghanistan for burial arrangements. Another young man from Afghanistan lost his life on 25 November, near Adasevci Transit Centre, believed to have committed suicide.

“I crossed borders seven times, I was arrested, walked for a week without a break. Now I am here [in Serbia] for two months and I gave birth to a baby girl 11 days ago. This Corner means a world to us,” says Ferista, who left Afghanistan while seven months pregnant. She is one of a couple of hundred women who visit the Miksaliste refugee transit centre in the Serbian capital every day.
