Libya continues to be the main transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. UNHCR's interverntions at disembarkation points in Libya focus on the provision of life-saving assistance and protection monitoring, to identify persons in need of international protection, as well as vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied and separated children, elderly, medical cases, women at risk or victims of trafficking.

On 1 November, IOM assisted 167 stranded Nigerien migrants, including 48 women, 40 children and 79 men, to return home to Niger from southern Libya.

The Community Stabilization Programme brought the Southern Heritage Festival for Peace to Twaiwa Village on 15 November.

IOM has offered two mobile-phones for the 32 women who escaped from the Islamic State in Sirte, with more interventions planned.

IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has released its fourth Flow Monitoring Analytical report.

GENEVA, 03 October, 2011– UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres warned today that an increasingly complex international environment is making it harder to find solutions for the world’s more than 43 million refugees, internally displaced and stateless people.

Speaking at the opening of the annual meeting in Geneva of UNHCR’s governing Executive Committee, Guterres said the international community needed to up its collective game to prevent conflict, to adapt to climate change and to better manage natural disasters.

Events in Libya and Syria have again brought the legitimacy of armed humanitarian intervention and so-called “responsibility to protect” into question.

Our hearts all go out to the unarmed demonstrators seeking to bring down corrupt dictatorships that are a plague on their people. In Tunisia and Egypt, the people rose and deposed dictators on their own. Armed supporters of the Mubarak regime did attack and even fire on people in Tahrir Square, but a massive crackdown was avoided when the military decided not to take the side of the dictator.

Multi-million dollar contribution will aid urgently needed mine action work in Afghanistan and Libya

As part of an assistance package that will support mine action efforts in Afghanistan and Libya, Denmark contributed DKK 15,000,000 to the Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action in March 2011. During 2010, Denmark was among the largest donors to the Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action, which the United Nations Mine Action Service manages.
