KABUL, Afghanistan The following is a chronology of Afghanistan, where Islamic fundamentalists have taken over the capital, Kabul, since the overthrow of the monarchy 23 years ago.

1973
After two centuries of monarchy, King Zahir Shah ousted in a military coup by his cousin Mohammad Daoud.

1978
President Daoud killed in a communist coup. Nur Mohammad Taraki elected president and Islamic groups start armed protests against communist policies.

1. UNOCHA FIELD OFFICE IN FAIZABAD, CAPITAL OF BADAKHSHAN PROVINCE WAS NOTIFIED BY PROVINCE GOVERNOR THAT A MAJOR LANDSLIDE HIT THE VILLAGE OF KURLUK ZIR KUTAL IN DARAIM DISTRICT. THE AREA IS WEST OF FAIZABAD NEAR THE BORDER WITH TAJIKISTAN. GOVERNOR REPORTED THAT 300 PEOPLE DIED AND 110 HOUSES WERE DESTROYED.

2. AT THE REQUEST OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES, UNICEF AND WFP FIELD STAFF ARE TRAVELLING TO THE AFFECTED AREA FROM 1 APRIL TO ASSESS THE SITUATION.

SITUATION

1. ON 15 JUNE 1993, HEAVY RAINS IN KABUL TRIGGERED MUDSLIDES IN THE CHINDAWAL DISTRICT SOUTH OF THE CITY CENTRE. TONS OF MUD AND ROCKS CRASHED DOWN ON MUDBRICK HOUSES. UNCONFIRMED PRELIMINARY REPORTS INDICATE THAT UP TO 115 PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE BEEN KILLED.

2. DHA GENEVA REQUESTED FURTHER INFORMATION FROM UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN AFGHANISTAN WHO IS TEMPORARILY RELOCATED IN ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN.

SITUATION

1. ON 3 SEPTEMBER 1992 EARLY IN THE MORNING FLASH FLOODS HIT AFGHAN HINDUKUSH MOUNTAINS. TORRENTS OF MUD AND BOLDERS CRASHED DOWN THREE RIVER VALLEYS. TIDAL WAVE WAS REPORTED TO BE UP 9 METRES (30 FT) HIGH AFFECTING A STRETCH OF 30 KM ALONG THE SALANG, GHORBAND AND SHUTUL VALLEYS. THE TOWN OF GULBAHAR, 75 KM NORTH OF KABUL, AT THE JUNCTION OF PANJSHER AND SHUTUL RIVERS WAS HIT.
