Landmines claim the lives of 150 to 300 people in Afghanistan each month. Very often, victims are children-boys, especially, who tend livestock and are attracted to the strange objects they find in the fields. Adequate medical care is usually beyond reach, and young life after young life is lost to conflicts over but not forgotten.

Islamabad (dpa) - A landmine blast Wednesday wounded a woman and a girl at a refugee camp in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) agency reported.

The explosion occurred at a camp in Zere Dasht area, some 35 kilometres west of Kandahar city - once a Taliban stronghold, the report said.

According to eyewitnesses, the landmine blew up after the unnamed Afghan woman lit a makeshift stove on the ground, causing severe burn injuries to her and injuring a young girl.

On 12 May, Afghanistan destroyed the first pile of more than 500 land mines to demonstrate its commitment to the global mine ban treaty, a Defence Ministry statement said. The mines, mostly anti-personnel, were blown up in the outskirts of Kabul, following the March 2003 signing of the treaty by Mr. Karzai's Government. Afghanistan's Defence Ministry said it was ready to speed-up the mine destruction process, if the UN and donor countries provided assistance.

In a UN-government joint venture, the first batch of 536 antipersonnel mines and 20 antitank mines were detonated in four massive blasts on Monday to the east of the capital, Kabul.
