KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - At least one Afghan working in a UN-sponsored program was killed and 11 wounded on Thursday in an ambush by suspected members of the ousted Taliban in western Afghanistan, a senior official said.
The ambush happened in the Chakaw region of Farah province where about 60 Afghans working for the Central Statistics Department were heading from neighboring Nimroz province after completing a UN-sponsored census project there.

I. SITUATION UPDATE
UN missions remain suspended in southern and southeastern provinces. On 3 December, a grenade was thrown at a Coalition Forces military police patrol in Kandahar city and another hand grenade was thrown to a crowd of people. Three soldiers and the attacker were injured.
Due to ongoing military operations in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nuristan, UN missions throughout the area remain suspended. UN curfew for international staff in Jalal Abad city is from 19h00 to 05h30.
Under the current circumstances of increased violence against aid workers in Afghanistan, the neutrality of humanitarian action is seriously challenged and the risk for MSF staff working outside of Kandahar has reached unacceptable levels. Recent attacks on aid workers in Afghanistan are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
Some $290 million would be needed next year to fund 300 mine action projects in 36 countries, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said at a Headquarters press briefing today.
ANKARA, 4 December (IRIN) - The EC has awarded a €26 million (about US $31.5 million) contract to a Chinese engineering company, China Railway Shisiju Group Corporation, for the first reconstruction phase of the vital 222-km Kabul-Jalalabad-Torkham (Towr Kham) road.
