The journey from Kabul to Kandahar was an arduous trip that required two days to travel; much of the road (surface) and several bridges suffered considerable deterioration, damage and lack of investment over the years, particularly during two-and-a half decades of civil war and hostilities. President Karzai stated that reconstruction of the country's principal road system is key to Afghanistan's economic recovery, as more than 35% of Afghanistan's population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the highway.

Gareth Thomas MP, the UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development is in Afghanistan where he will meet President Karzai, Ministers in the Afghan Transitional Authority, other donors and the UN to hear their assessment of progress and to reiterate UK's commitment to the reconstruction process of Afghanistan.

While in Afghanistan Mr Thomas said: "The progress made in Afghanistan since September 2001 is impressive. Few would have thought two years ago that we would have come so far.

Under the current circumstances of increased violence against aid workers in Afghanistan, the neutrality of humanitarian action is seriously challenged and the risk for MSF staff working outside of Kandahar has reached unacceptable levels. Recent attacks on aid workers in Afghanistan are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
