Poverty, conflict and sheer desperation drove a staggering 4.5 million Afghans from their homes during a period of civil war, invasion and repression that spanned more than 20 years. Include in this, five years of Taliban rule and three years of severe drought, it comes as no surprise that social, political and economic structures within Afghanistan have been left shattered.
