Since the start of winter the electricity cuts in the Gaza Strip have continued to worsen, seriously impacting access to basic human rights of the population of two-million. The current electricity supply stands at four hours, followed by a 12-hour blackout, but on sporadic rotation. The vulnerable populations that live in the hundreds of high-rise building in Gaza face particular difficulty, notably older, sick and disabled people, as elevators are inoperable.

Sarmad is holding his infant son, Anas, in his arms. “I’m constantly afraid for him,” he admits. “I’m afraid what happened to me will happen to him.

"I was injured when a car packed with explosives plowed into a group," Sarmad explains. "Dozens of local people came to help us and then a suicide bomber blew himself up in the middle of the crowd. It looked like the apocalypse. I was trapped under the rubble for an hour.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 7,984 refugees were received in Uganda from South Sudan between the 4th and 10th of January. After a significant reduction in the number of new arrivals towards the end of 2016, the arrival rate has again increased, with a daily average of 1,140 new arrivals.

  • The majority of South Sudanese refugees arrive in Uganda through informal border points, with 13 refugees arriving in Uganda through the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 5,389 South Sudanese refugees have reached Uganda through the DRC to date.

Mongolia’s last winter season began early, arriving in November 2016 following a cold surge. According to the Mongolian Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, by Mid-December 2016, some 50 percent of the country was covered in snow and faced a high risk of dzud (local term for severe winter). The institute also warned that temperatures could drop as low as minus 40 and 50 degrees Celsius in Northern and Eastern Mongolia, where heavy snows could cause the death of thousands of livestock.

  • The security situation in Grand’Anse has deteriorated following the arrest of senator-elect Guy Philippe, on 05 January with many demonstrations and road blocks reported and affecting humanitarian operations which were either temporally suspended or limited

  • The preliminary results of a new Emergency Food Security Assessment (EFSA) show that food security and availability in markets have improved in the communes affected by Matthew with the levels of inadequate food consumption decreasing in both Sud and Grand’Anse.

On 31 December 2016, UNAMID peacekeepers distributed blankets to displaced people residing in three camps in El Geneina, West Darfur. The initiative was aimed at helping the local community cope with winter and prevent illnesses associated with the season.

Some 100 internally displaced persons (IDPs), including people with disabilities and the elderly, living in Krindig I, Krindig II and Abuzar camps benefited from the contribution.
