11 March 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - UNOSAT will soon enter the third year of monitoring of the Syria crisis in support of the international humanitarian community and the High-Commissioner for Refugees in particular. UNOSAT first situation maps about the unfolding of the Syrian crisis date back mid-2011. Today, the number of Syrians fleeing increasingly violent conflict has reportedly surpassed the staggering number of one million.

Estonia Helping to Improve Situation of Syrian Refugees in Jordan

Hajj Meat to Reach Syrian Refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon & Displaced Somalis

Jeddah, KSA, 15.01.2013 – A shipment of Hajj meat from the Saudi Project for Utilization of Hajj Meat, Adahi, managed by the Islamic Development Bank, is scheduled to reach the Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon through the National Saudi Campaign for Relief Aid. Another consignment is also being distributed among the needy in Somalia.

The Adahi distribution plan for Hajj season 2012, envisages the distribution of around 993,000 frozen carcasses of sheep amongst the needy in Saudi Arabia and in 24 countries in Asia and Africa via sea and land.

Syria Crisis sub-regional highlights: Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, 26 October - 1 November 2012

Within Syria, the UN estimates that 2.5 million people – close to half of them children – are affected by the conflict and 1.2 million are displaced. The actual figures may be still higher. Syrian children and adolescents face interruption of schooling, limited access to basic services, and psychosocial distress caused by witnessing violence and displacement. In Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, 282,363 Syrians are currently registered as refugees and 78,622 are awaiting registration (UNHCR, 25 October 2012).

Islamic Relief USA to Assist 5,500 Syrian Refugees in Jordan

(Washington, D.C., 1/10/2012) Islamic Relief USA (IR USA), a relief and development organization based in the D.C. metro area, announced today its humanitarian effort to assist nearly 5,500 displaced Syrian refugees in Jordan. According to the latest estimates by the United Nations, more than 5,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the escalating violence in Syria. Neighboring countries are witnessing a mass influx of refugees fleeing the crippling violence and harsh winter conditions.

2010 Human Rights Report

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy ruled by King Abdullah II bin Hussein, with a population of six million. The constitution concentrates executive and legislative authority in the king. The multiparty parliament consists of the 55-member House of Notables (Majlis al-Ayan), appointed by the king, and a 120-member elected lower house, the Chamber of Deputies (Majlis al-Nuwwab). Parliamentary elections, which international observers deemed credible, were held on November 9 after the king dissolved parliament in November 2009.

OPT: UNRWA holds pledging conference, with speakers warning financial situation precarious

Stressing the international community's responsibility to address the needs of Palestinian refugees and expressing alarm over the chronic funding shortfall of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) set up to support them, 20 donors this morning pledged approximately US$ 214 million to UNRWA for 2011, and several more indicated their contributions would be forthcoming.
