Guineans flee Conakry unrest, ethnic tension

Report
IRIN

DAKAR, 7 June 2013 (IRIN) - Guinea’s political violence is hitting residents of the capital Conakry increasingly hard, with some families forced to flee their homes and others relocating for fear of ethnically based attacks.

President Alpha Condé has ordered an investigation into the latest violence, which followed a 23 May opposition protest over upcoming legislative elections. The government says 12 people were killed and about 100 others injured.

In December, Conde was inaugurated as the country's first democratically elected president since independence from France in 1958. While the elections were generally regarded as free and fair, the second round was accompanied by widespread violence.

UNHCR helps Guinea ease the local integration of Liberian refugees

N'ZEREKORE, Guinea, August 16 (UNHCR) - When the UN refugee agency wrapped up its Liberian refugee repatriation programme earlier this year it did not turn its back on an estimated 80,000 people who have stayed behind in West African host countries like Guinea.

More than 350,000 Liberians fled the civil war raging in their country from 1989 to 2003. With the return of peace and democracy, tens of thousands opted to return home. From October 2004, UNHCR helped more than 105,000 Liberians repatriate from countries around the region, while a further 50,000 registered refugees made their

CWS Situation Report: Guinean civil strife/refugees - 05 Feb 2007

Nearly 60 people have been killed in recent violence between Guinea President Lansana Conte's government and trade unions. Union members rioted during a general strike, accusing the president of mismanaging Guinea's economy and condoning corruption.

While Conte's appointment of a new prime minister helped end the strike, instability may send refugees across the border into neighboring countries, especially Sierra Leone. Fighting in Sierra Leone's 11-year war pushed half a million refugees into Guinea, and conflict in Guinea could again push refugees back across the border.

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis - to whom quoted text may be attributed - at the press briefing, on 26 January 2007, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The general strike paralysing Guinea over the last two weeks has limited our access to camps hosting Liberian refugees. But, despite this, security permitting, we plan to go ahead with a voluntary repatriation convoy tomorrow (Saturday) which will bring to 46,000 the number of refugees helped by UNHCR to return to Liberia from Guinea since the repatriation programme started in October 2004.
