400,000 displaced by floods sweeping across West Africa

Torrential rains have struck several West African countries during the past few weeks resulting in mass displacements throughout the region. Following a severe drought, the August floods have exacerbated an ongoing regional food security crisis.

Sudan, Rwanda, Ghana: In the "country of the generous people"

Our story begins with Janvier Tuyishime. Tuyishime fled his native Rwanda in 1999 and eventually came to live at Krisan Refugee Camp in Ghana's Western Region. In 2009, his application to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program was processed by the Church World Service Overseas Processing Entity in Accra, Ghana, and he was approved for resettlement to the United States.

METHODLOGIE

La mission d'évaluation conjointe (JAM) a couvert aussi bien les populations réfugiées que les populations hôtes. Cette JAM conduite du 12 au 17 septembre 2010 est la première depuis l'arrivée des réfugiés et depuis que l'assistance en leur faveur a été déclenchée. Cette mission a été conduite par le PAM et le HCR en collaboration étroite avec les Partenaires Opérationnels (POs) à savoir la Croix Rouge Togolaise (CRT), l'Association Togolaise du Bien Etre Familial (ATBEF), et des partenaires du gouvernement.

Ghana: USAID Distributes Insecticide Treated Nets to Flood Victims in Central Region

Accra, August 25, 2010: More than 17,000 people who were displaced by floods in the Central Region obtained extra protection from malaria infection from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID distributed 7,560 insecticide treated bed nets to the flood victims of thirty-four communities in five districts. The distribution is valued at approximately $53,600.

The districts that received the bed nets are Agona West, Agona East, Gomoa East, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo, and Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam.

4 juin 2010 - De nouvelles tensions au sein des groupes de refugiés ghanéens au Togo contraignent le Haut commissariat aux refugiés (HCR) à ouvrir deux camps différents afin de séparer les populations, a indiqué vendredi le porte-parole du HCR, Andrej Mahecic.

De violents affrontements entre deux villages au nord-est du Ghana ont éclaté depuis la fin du mois d'avril provoquant la fuite de 3.600 ghanéens vers le Togo voisin.

Togo : 193 réfugiés rentrent au pays

Le 24e convoi de réfugiés togolais en provenance du Ghana, soit de 193 personnes dont 114 enfants, 61 femmes et 18 garçons, est arrivé à Lomé jeudi. Au total 4401 rapatriés sont retournés dans leur pays depuis la signature des accords tripartites entre le Togo, le Ghana et le HCR, y compris des réfugiés arrivés dans les années 90.

Des mesures sont prises pour faciliter la réinsertion : délivrance d'une attestation de protection, assistance financière de 60.000Fcfa par adulte, 30.000 par enfant et octroi de micro crédits.

Relaunched Liberian repatriation operation gains momentum

MONROVIA, Liberia, May 26 (UNHCR) - The UN refugee agency has helped almost 900 Liberians return home from other West African countries since resuming a voluntary repatriation programme in mid-April.

UNHCR, with aircraft space provided by the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), has flown home 646 returnees from Ghana, 196 from Guinea and 41 from Nigeria since April 13. An estimated 200 Liberians have returned home on their own from Côte d'Ivoire and 61 from Sierra Leone during the same period.

Ghana-Liberia : A road-map to end stand-off over refugees

ACCRA, 28 March 2008 (IRIN) - The Ghanaian government said it will stop deporting Liberian refugees and made an agreement with the Liberian government to work with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in drawing up a roadmap for repatriating the 40,000 Liberian refugees current in Ghana.

"We hope (The repatriation) can be carried through without bitterness and embarrassment to either of the two countries," Ghana's President Kufuor John Kufuor told the press following three days of talks with a high-level Liberian delegation led by its foreign Minister Mrs Olubanke King-Akerele

Ghana: Deportation to Liberia

This is a summary of what was said by the UNHCR spokesperson at today's Palais des Nations press briefing in Geneva.

Following a deportation on Sunday 23 March of 16 Liberians by the Ghanaian authorities - 13 of them registered with UNHCR as refugees - we have urged Ghana to cease any further forcible removals.

Internet documentary on Liberian refugee school wins UNICEF award at Japan Prize 2007

TOKYO, Japan, 31 October 2007 - 'Inspirations: A West African Story', a documentary about a school for Liberian refugee children in Ghana, has won a special UNICEF award at Japan Prize 2007, an international educational programme contest organized by NHK, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation.

The UNICEF Prize, one of several special honours presented at the annual Japan Prize ceremony, has been awarded since 1967 to programmes that promote understanding of the lives or circumstances of children in difficult situations.

Africa floods displace more than a million

At least 300 people have died in the flooding since heavy rains began sweeping across the continent two months ago. With nearly half of Africa's countries hit, the cost of the damage, is only beginning to emerge.

More than 1.5 million people in 18 countries have been affected, with thousands displaced and massive damage to crops and livestock leading to fears of food shortages.

ActionAid partners are on the ground in Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria.

Togolese refugees start going home from Ghana with UNHCR help

WLI, Ghana, September 27 (UNHCR) - The voluntary repatriation of Togolese refugees from Ghana has got under way with a first group of 176 men, women and children people heading home by road convoy with the help of the UN refugee agency.

The returnees, including 98 children and teenagers, are among a group of 1,700 Togolese refugees in eastern Ghana's Volta region who have registered to take advantage of easing tensions and return home. UNHCR is giving priority to those who want to be back in time for Togo's parliamentary election on October 14.
