New camps as floods displace more people in Nyando

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has set up new displaced people’s (IDPs) camps in several parts of Nyando District after major rivers and streams within the District burst their banks over the weekend. The rivers that pose major challenges to the affected communities are River Nyando and River Miriu. Following heavy rains in the District over the weekend of 10th – 12th May; 2013, at least three schools including Ahero Girls Secondary School, Kokwach and Apondo primary schools have been closed after River Nzoia burst its banks.

Kenya Red Cross Receives Ksh. 10 M from Safaricom for Flood Victims Rescue Efforts

Safaricom Foundation on Friday 3rd May 2013, donated Kshs.10 million to fund rescue efforts for flood victims following a USD 3.5 million (Kshs.292, 950,000) appeal by the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS). Heavy rains in the last two-months have resulted in at least 74 reported deaths and more than 100,000 people homeless while exposing hundreds of others to malaria, dengue fever and other flood related risks.

Floods Update 2nd May 2013

In Garissa County, North Eastern, water levels in Tana River are steady at 473mm. House holds (HH) that had camped in Umusalama (120 HH), Hyuga (186 HH) and have (289 HH) have left the camps and gone back to their villages although they still have no access to clean water and latrines.

Floods Update As At 23rd April 2013

On 19th and 20th April 2013, a team of 3 volunteers from the KRCS Holla Branch went out on a response after they received a report that 205 household had been displaced from Kiembeni village to Daku, Kumbi and Rhoka primary schools. The team was out on an assessment to view the gravity of the situation. The team found some of the households had tried to evacuate to higher grounds.

Renewed Conflict in Kuria Renders 570 People Homeless

There have been several conflict-related incidents in the Kuria East District since January 2013. The conflicts, which have been associated with cattle rustling, have impacted negatively on livelihood and political stability in the affected area, leaving 3 people injured and two dead. So far, a cumulative total of 135 houses have been torched from both communities.

Situation

The situation in Tana-Delta remains calm with rains having begun on 2nd November 2012, forecast by KMD indicated that the rains would begin in the 4th week of October. The intensity is yet to be ascertained. Should the forecast be as stated, then then rains may affect the situation of the area especially the internally displaced persons who are still staying in camps in various parts of the district.

Urgent KRCS appeal for Tana River Residents

KRCS is urgently appealing for donations for Tana River Clash Victims, with particular regard for the women and children who continue to suffer most.

10 Million from Safaricom Foundation Towards Tana Delta

The KRCS has received Ksh10 Million from Safaricom Foundation, which will go towards rebuilding of houses and livelihoods of people affected by conflict in Tana Delta.

This will go along way to assist the affected families with at least 116 people having lost their lives, more than 12,000 displaced and more than 30,000 people affected by the ethno-political clashes that have been ongoing in parts of Tana Delta for the last four weeks, starting on the night of 13th August 2012.

At least 116 people have lost their lives and more than 12,000 displaced and another more than 30,000 people affected by the ethno-political clashes that have been ongoing in parts of Tana Delta for the last four weeks, starting on the night of 13th August 2012.

Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) and the local administration have been in Tana Delta since then, offering the much needed humanitarian aid that include food and non-food items, shelter, relief and health services to people affected by the conflict most of who have settled in temporary camps.

Houses on Fire as Conflict Persists

As of now, Monday 10th September 2012 at 10.00 am, clashes are ongoing and houses are on fire at Kilelengwani Village, Tarassa division in Tana Delta, after the village was attacked by more than 300 people. The police in collaboration with Kenya Red Cross personnel have rescued at least 3 people but the situation is still volatile and more updates will follow as the response advances. Kenya Red Cross Society is responding with ambulances with paramedics on board and first aiders.

Kipini Mission

On the Saturday of 25th August 2012, the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) disaster response teams and lifeguards backed by Ministry of Health doctors from Kipini Health Centre left for Tizama in Lako, Ozi, Kileleguani villages. The purpose of the visit was to carry out rapid needs assessments and to find out gaps before embarking on humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced people (IDPs).

Clashes Intervention Updates 24th-25th August

TANA DELTA Kenya Red Cross Society together with local administration are on the ground offering food items and non food items to clash victims who have settled in two main camps while other families intergraded making it hard to single out the geunuene affected population.

The intervention of Non food items commence on 23rd August by Kenya Red Cross. Currently the internvention is focused on clash victim families at Didewaride, Witu, Mpeketoni and the previous five villages ealier affected at Kipini.

MANDERA

Most villages in Mandera North and Banissa areas are completely deserted. Women and children have been moved out of Rhamu to neighbouring areas such as Sala and Mandera while the men have remained behind in the areas characterised by high tension. There is a high number of internally displaced people in the area.

Burnt Forest Medical camp

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), Rift Valley Region conducted a medical camp from 19th to 21st July 2012 at Chemusian, Burnt Forest and Eldoret East Constituency.

The medical camp targeted the Mau evictees who are vulnerable to disease due to exposure to cold weather, after they were relocated to Chemusian where there are long rains. The evictees sum up to 413 households that approximates to 1,180 people.

Displacement as River Tana breaks its banks

There has been flooding in different parts of Kenya as a result of heavy rains from April 2012 to date. At least 70 people have lost their lives, more than 100,000 others have been displaced and another population of over 280, 000 have been affected by the floods in one way or another, thus disrupting their normal lives.

Heavy rains continued pounding several parts of the country over the weekend, with several families getting displaced here and there. In Thika County’s Ofafa area at least 100 households (HH) were affected when their houses were submerged after heavy rains on the evening of 1st May; 2012.

Learning Resumes as Kenya Red Cross Provides Water

Learning is starting to resume in most schools in Moyale, after several people were displaced, following clashes between the Boran and Gabra communities in February 2012. The displacements disrupted learning in most schools in the district after teachers as well as students got displaced. However, displaced people from most of the locations in the district are slowly going back to their original homes, thus students and pupils starting to go back to school.

3 die as 29 Families are Rendered Homeless in Clashes

For six days since Sunday 19th February 2012 to date, there has been tension in Kibigori Sub location, Chemilil location, resulting to tribal clashes between two neighbouring communities at the border of Nandi south and Muhoroni districts. The clashes were as a result of cattle rustling where some people from both communities, in the two districts, stole cattle from each.

No Returnees yet as KRCS Continues to Intervene

Almost a month after a conflict between the Borana/Gabra in Moyale over scarce resources, especially water, pasture and land, the displaced people are yet to return to their homes. The conflict affected at least eleven villages namely Hellu, Mansille, Kanisa, Adha, Butiye, Somare, Dabel, Sessi, Funan Nyatta, Manyatta/Arsako and Butte/Gurar, leaving at least 48 people dead and several other hundreds injured and/displaced.

One person dies following conflict in Kiserian

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) South Rift team responded to an incident of an armed conflict between the Ichamus and the Tugen communities in Kiserian area, Mukutani division, Marigat District on Thursday 3rd February 2012.

The conflict, which was ignited by the setting up of new ward boundaries as a result of the new constitution, has so far claimed one life on and left several herds men injured and many other people displaced.
