Health Emergency Highlights, April 2013

Situation highlights

The health situation across the Republic of South Sudan remains fragile and unpredictable. There are high risks of communicable diseases, floods and drought, low access to safe drinking water, food insecurity, and poor sanitation. Environmental factors contribute to the spread of diseases such as water and vector-borne diseases like diarrhoeal diseases, hepatitis, malaria and dengue fever.

South Sudan Emergency humanitarian situation report Issue 11, 1-7 April 2013

  • In this reporting period, the Head of WHO Country Office, Dr Abdi Aden Mohamed also the Resident Coordinator–Humanitarian Coordinator a.i together with Ms.Hilde Johnson, Special Representative of the Secretary General in South Sudan, co-chaired the weekly. Dr Abdi also chaired the UN Senior Management Team meetings and the bi-weekly UN Country Team meeting.

  • During this reporting period, WHO coordinated the medical evacuation of three patients from Pochalla in Pochalla county to Bor State hospital.

Emergency vaccination in Jebel Amir

Over 47 000 children were vaccinated against measles and polio during an emergency vaccination campaign conducted from 4 to 10 April in Jebel Amir area, North Darfur.

More than 110 000 people are believed to have sought refuge in five major towns after violence hit the gold-rich Jebel Amir area at the beginning of January. WHO and the State Ministry of Health of North Darfur visited Jebel Amir as early as February and decided to conduct an emergency immunization campaign of children under 15 against measles and of children under 5 against polio.

L e “droit à la vaccination reconnu à tous les enfants congolais, doit s’appliquer également aux enfants vivant dans les camps des déplacés comme ceux de Mugunga III, où nous avons lancé les activités de la Semaine Africaine de Vaccination (SAV)”, a indiqué le Ministre provincial de la Santé du Nord-Kivu, Mr Kahindo Muthethe Mundenga. Mugunga III, dont la population déplacée est estimée à près de 9.000 ménages, est l’un des camps des déplacés internes situé à une dizaine de kilomètres au Nord de Goma, la capitale provinciale du Nord-Kivu.

Donor update, The Syrian Arab Republic - 9 April 2013

Lack of fuel and electricity have forced many hospitals to operate with reduced capacity despite being overburdened with patients. Many health professionals have fled the country, and local production of medicines has been reduced by 90 per cent.

The Central African Republic

Situation highlights

The protracted armed conflict in the Central African Republic has intensified since December, with the Séléka armed coalition overtaking the capital Bangui and culminating in a coup d’état on 24 March. Due to the insecurity since Séléka took control ofthe capital, healthcare delivery to the general population of Bangui is heavily affected.

South Sudan Emergency humanitarian situation report Issue 9, 17 March – 24 March 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

 During this reporting, WHO and other partners supported the Ministry of Health to conduct the polio campaigns for children under 5 years in all the states.

 Conducted a rapid health assessment in Koch County for Kala azar outbreak.

 The organization supported MEDAIR with technical support to conduct investigations of suspected measles cases in Mareang and nyadine villages in Fangak county, Jonglei state.

Sudan Health Sector Fact Sheet [EN/AR]

5.75 million people in Sudan are in need of basic health services.

The number of health personnel in Darfur is five times lower than the WHO benchmark.

WHAT?

• Inadequate and insufficient access to primary health care and referral services for 5.75 million IDPs, returnees, refugees and people from affected host communities in Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Abyei and east Sudan.

• High morbidity and mortality from communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

South Sudan Emergency humanitarian situation report Issue 8, 25 February – 16 March 2013

HIGHGLIGHTS

-ƒ WHO prepositioned medical supplies to Unity state to support emergency response. Among the items prepositioned were; One Interagency Emergency Health Kit, One Trauma Kit and two Diarrheal Disease kits.

-ƒ WHO supported all the state ministries of health with preparations for the polio campaigns to be conducted country wide. WHO provided all the operational costs and provided technical support during the preparations.

Syrian Arab Republic, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt Situation Report - Issue 12 |15 March 2013

This week marks two years since the beginning of Syrian crisis. It also sees the number of refugees surpass the one million mark. As a result of the conflict, 70 000 individuals have lost their lives and an estimated further 350 000 persons have been injured. The health system has been severely disrupted, along with the health care infrastructure, with the workforce and availability of essential medicines and supplies being most affected.

  • WHO prepositioned medical supplies to Unity state to support emergency response. Among the items prepositioned were; One inter-agency health kit, one trauma kit A and B, one anaesthetic kit and major and minor surgical kits.

HIGHGLIGHTS

  • Investigated a suspected measles outbreak in Alaka and Foukara payams, Renk County

  • Coordinated with ICRC,MSF NDH and SMOH Jonglei state to ensure that the injured people in Walgak access life saving surgery.

  • During this reporting period, the program supported all the states to conduct support supervision visits to the states to conduct AFP case search.

  • Supported ACROSS with assortment of drug and other medical supplies to respond to health needs of the refugees in Ngorom and Lasu Refugee camps.

HIGHLIGHTS

Syrian Arab Republic: Reports indicate an increase in number of suspected cases of typhoid fever and cutaneous leishmaniasis WHO continues to provide medicines and medical supplies to health facilities and nongovernmental organizations in all affected governorates.

Jordan: WHO Jordan supports the Ministry of Health in continued routine vaccinations conducted inside and outside the Zaatari refugee camp.
