Strengthening the Rule of Law in Crisis-affected and Fragile Situations: Global Programme Annual Report 2011

Highlights

  • In Somalia, UNDP has facilitated the recruitment of more than 14,000 police officers and the creation of mobile courts, legal aid centres and sexual assault referral centres. This has increased the ability of people to access the formal justice system.

  • In Afghanistan, UNDP supports the remuneration of the 137,000 strong Afghan National Police force and pioneered the development of the force’s first community security initiatives.

AmeriCares Prepares for Hurricanes in the U.S. and Latin America

Stamford, Conn. – June 1, 2012 – AmeriCares is launching two new disaster preparedness initiatives today, the official start of the 2012 hurricane season in the Atlantic, to help prepare families in hurricane-prone communities throughout the United States and Latin America. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting nine to 15 named storms over the next six months, including four to eight hurricanes.

Américas - Desde 2005, las oficinas de la OIM en América del Norte y Central han prestado asistencia a 900 migrantes vulnerables, incluidos más de 500 menores, para retornar a sus países de origen. Estas operaciones han sido financiadas por el Fondo intrarregional para migrantes en situaciones de alta vulnerabilidad, creado por los miembros de la Conferencia Regional sobre Migración (CRM), a saber: Belice, Canadá, Costa Rica, república Dominicana, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, México, Nicaragua, Panamá y Estados Unidos, y gestionadas por la oficina regional de la OIM en Costa Rica.

CERF Activities in 2011

Highlights

Funding Situation

The CERF raised a record amount of US$465 million through the contributions of Member States, Observers, regional governments and the private sector. 2011 marks only the second time in the history of the Fund that it exceeded the $450 million target established for it by the General Assembly.

Additionally, $46.4 million was transferred from the CERF loan window to the grant window with the reduction of the loan element by the General Assembly.

Millions in Aid to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

Amid rising concerns about outbreaks of water borne diseases and food shortages triggered by crisis-level flooding in Central America, AmeriCares is responding with medical aid and nutritional supplements to help survivors in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The flooding, caused by heavy rains of a severe tropical depression, has affected 1.2 million people throughout the region, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced and in dire need of medical care.

Central America Floods: Keeping unborn children healthy

The women began to arrive from early morning as soon as they were informed the mobile clinic was coming to the Health Centre of Caluco in the Salvadorean Department of Sonsonate.

Some women arrived accompanied by a friend, others arrived on their own. The majority of them were pregnant, who had taken refuge in temporary shelters since Tropical Depression 12 – E ravaged the country, flooding approximately 10 per cent of the country’s territory, damaging highways and rural roads and disrupting public services.

UNFPA Deploys Mobile Clinics to Reach those Affected by Central America floods

UNITED NATIONS, New York

In response to the different states of high alert across Central America, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, has been mobilizing resources to provide lifesaving reproductive health care in the region. Over 1.2 million people have been affected by Tropical Depression 12-E, which has caused heavy rain and severe flooding.
