LONDON, 21 May 2013 (IRIN) - Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are forced from their homes by violence or natural disasters. But the face of displacement is changing: While the popular view of displacement is one of sprawling rural camps, displaced people are now just as likely to be living in urban areas, often hidden from view.

The Kampala Convention: Entry Into Force - Expert Q & A

The world’s internally displaced persons (IDPs) number in the tens of millions; the majority of are in Africa. IDPs are profoundly vulnerable and must contend with homelessness, hunger, human rights violations and violence. For years, the African Union has sought to help mitigate the plight of IDPs and now with the entry into force of the Kampala Convention they have formulated and adopted a legally binding instrument that can do more to help this population.

Australia commended for helping refugees and displaced people with disabilities

The Australian aid program was recognised for its global leadership on disability-inclusive approaches in humanitarian settings at an event in New York on 2 May 2013.

The prestigious ‘Voices of Courage’ award was presented to Australia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr Gary Quinlan, by the Women’s Refugee Commission, an international non-government organisation that seeks to advance the rights and dignity of refugees. Two former refugees, Dahabo Hassan Maow and Atim Caroline Ogwang Atanga, also shared their stories and received awards.

Un taux record de 28,8 millions de personnes déplacées internes dans le monde en 2012, dont une multiplication par cinq du nombre de déplacés internes en Syrie

GENEVE, 29 AVRIL 2013 : Le nombre de personnes déplacées au sein de leur pays en raison d’un conflit armé, de violence ou de violations des droits humains était estimé fin 2012 à 28,8 millions, soit une augmentation de 2,4 millions de personnes par rapport à l’année précédente et le chiffre le plus élevé jamais enregistré par l’Observatoire des situations de déplacement interne (IDMC).

GINEBRA, 29 de ABRIL de 2013: A finales de 2012, el número de desplazados internos por causa de conflictos armados, violencia y violaciones de derechos humanos fue de 28,8 millones. Esta cantidad supone un aumento de 2,4 millones respecto al año anterior, y es la cifra más alta jamás registrada por el IDMC.

En el año 2012 hubo más de 6,5 millones de nuevos desplazados, casi el doble que en el 2011. Debido a que estas personas no han cruzado una frontera, no son refugiados y no se benefician de la protección internacional.
