A REVIEW OF THE HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE TO THE 2011 THAILAND AND CAMBODIA FLOODS

Executive Summary

Between July and October 2011, a succession of cyclones, tropical storms and intense monsoonal rains across Southeast Asia resulted in the worst flooding in the region in more than a decade. In Thailand, more than 14m people in 65 provinces were affected; in Cambodia, more than a million people in 18 provinces. By the time the flood waters began to recede, more than 20m people across the region, including 10m children, had been affected.

Executive Summary

DFID’s response to the Darfur conflict since 2003 was one of its largest ever humanitarian operations. In the absence of a clear political agreement, the humanitarian support has continued, even though many displaced people have now settled permanently in new locations.

This evaluation looks at the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) component of DFID’s response. It examines the relative effectiveness of three delivery channels and DFID’s ability to adjust from emergency to more sustainable support in a protracted conflict.

Sudan Common Humanitarian Fund Interim Update 2012

Sudan Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) has allocated US $ 76.81 million to 158 projects (170 allocations) across Sudan in 2012 as of 30 November 2012.

The CHF offers rapid and flexible funding to support immediate and high priority humanitarian action. In 2012 the fund continued to support both national and international non-governmental partners. This has ensured strengthened collaboration among partners, as well as supported local capacity building and empowered local response.

Editorial

Les précédents numéros de la Lettre de l’Observatoire étaient fortement orientés vers les camps de déplacés et les questions relatives à la reconstruction. Si ces problématiques demeurent toujours aussi aiguës, ce numéro décentre provisoirement son attention sur d’autres sujets qui nous semblent devoir également attirer l’attention. Les trois articles ne sont pas forcément liés, si ce n’est par le fait que chacun d’entre eux s’enracine dans les enseignements consécutifs à la catastrophe du 12 janvier 2010.
