The State of the World's Refugees 2000: Fifty Years of Humanitarian Action

Six years after the genocide Rwanda is still living with consequences. Although most people who fled their homes in the aftermath of the genocide have returned home, problems of displacement continued in 1997/98 with a rebel insurgency in the north.

Ockenden Update/Emergency: Drought in Afghanistan


"Afghanistan is presently struggling under the worst drought in living memory."

Whilst initially the drought was considered to be confined to the south-eastern corner of Afghanistan, it has become clear that its effects are far more widespread. Ockenden already works in Herat in Western Afghanistan and is well placed to help this crisis become a disaster.

Internal Displacement in the Republic of Liberia

Four years since the end of its brutal and protracted civil war, Liberia still very much wears the scars of conflict. Some observers estimated that as many as 100,000 Liberians remained displaced in and around the country's capital, Monrovia, as of July 2000.
