IOM Amman Press Briefing Note 1 Apr 2003: Sudan, Jordan, Syria

Extract
SUDAN- First Group of Sudanese Evacuated from Iran Arrives in Khartoum - A group of 144 Sudanese nationals who yesterday was successfully evacuated by IOM staff from No Man's Land on the Iran-Iraq border, arrived safely last night in Khartoum.

The group, which included 109 adults, 28 children and 7 infants, boarded an IOM-chartered Mahan Air plane in Kermanshah for the four hour flight to Khartoum

An IOM medical officer, Dr. Kliyinko accompanied the group and reports that there were no major health problems during the flight apart from children suffering from airsickness.

New agreement to help Kinshasa's Angolan refugees return home

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, March 31 (UNHCR) - The UN refugee agency and the governments of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have agreed on a plan to repatriate more than 163,000 Angolan refugees from the DRC in a major operation set to begin in May this year.
The agreement, reached by the three parties at a two-day meeting in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa on March 28-29, follows a similar tripartite meeting held two weeks ago in the Zambian capital, Lusaka. The Lusaka meeting finalised plans for the return of more

The UNESCO Director General said "we all must ensure the continuity of the educational process for the Iraqi children."

Declaring his "deep sympathy with the Iraqi people, whose suffering has been worsened by the lack of food and drinking water supplies", Koichiro Matsuura has reaffirmed UNESCO's determination to "resume as soon as possible, alongside the other eight United Nations system agencies involved, an active part in the implementation of the Oil for Food Programme."

Kenya Humanitarian Update Mar 2003

Half a million Kenyans lack adequate food
Some 500,000 people are currently food insecure in the areas of West Pokot, southern Turkana, Baringo and the agro-pastoral Marakwet Districts says a report on short rains assessment carried out in the area in February.

The teams comprising of Government of Kenya, United Nations and NGO officials, said though these areas are highly food insecure at the moment, favorable long-rains should mitigate losses by improving access to pasture, browse and water.

Afghanistan: National Return, Displacement and Reintegration Strategy for the year 1382/2003

I. Introduction

The Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, aware of its responsibilities to promote the safe and sustainable return of Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons to their areas of origin, has prepared the following strategy. Iraq: UNOPS-IDP Situation Report 29 Mar 2003


Highlights
The growing presence of US troops in the area and the heavy air attacks on GOI positions close to the dividing line with Erbil has raised tensions in the city. Dahuk remains calm and the recovery of the market is ongoing. There are fears that the tension level may rise given ongoing political developments. Sulaymaniyah remains tense as a result of the conflict with Ansar al Islam, the bombardment of GOI positions near the dividing line and the entry of Kurdish peshmerga into GOI territory.
