15 Masvingo Schools Damaged by Storms Shut Down

CHIREDZI, MASVINGO — At least 15 schools in Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts in Masvingo Province failed to open for the second term this week following the destruction of sanitary facilities and buildings by a heavy hailstorm which recently swept across the region leaving a trail of destruction.

Education officials in Masvingo say the schools should remain closed to avoid an outbreak of diseases.

Argentina: Floods DREF operation n° MDRAR007

CHF 299,892 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency F und (DREF) to support the Argentine Red Cross (ARC) in delivering immediate assistance to some 9,600 beneficiaries.
Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary: A severe local storm on the night of 2 April caused heavy flooding in La Plata, the capital of the Buenos Aires province. The flooding affected over 350,000 people, led to mass evacuations and caused 52 deaths.

HIGHLIGHTS

● Escalation in clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces during West Bank protests in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli jails.

● In East Jerusalem, settler organizations have accelerated their efforts to take over land and property, triggering imminent displacement of the affected Palestinians.

● Over 2,400 people in the Gaza Strip, whose homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair during the November 2012 round of hostilities, are still displaced.

One person injured and 127 households left homeless as rains cause havoc in western region

The Western Region has been experiencing heavy rains in the last one week that has left 127 households affected and one person injured with a broken leg.

On Tuesday 14th March 2013 at around 5 pm, a strong wind storm swept through Vihiga, Hamisi and Sabatia Constituencty as well as leaving at least 61 households homeless and one person injured with a broken leg.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The killing of six unarmed civilians by Israeli forces raises concerns about possible violations of the right to life, as well as regarding a lack of accountability.

  • January recorded the largest number of demolitions in Area C of the West Bank in a single month in over two years, resulting in the displacement of 250 people.

  • The situation of some already vulnerable communities was exacerbated as a result of a winter storm that struck the oPt between 7 and 10 January.
